Kent State coach Haynes to miss opener on medical leave

Aug 28, 2017 - 3:12 AM Kent State head coach Paul Haynes is taking a leave of absence because of undisclosed medical reasons, the school announced Sunday.

Offensive coordinator Don Treadwell will serve as head coach in place of Haynes, who "is expected to return to the team in two to three weeks," according to a news release.

The 48-year-old Haynes will miss the Golden Flashes' season opener at No. 5 Clemson on Saturday and possibly a home game against Howard on Sept. 9.

"We fully support head coach Paul Haynes during his leave," Kent State athletic director Joel Nielsen said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Haynes family as we look forward to his return to Kent State."

Treadwell had filled in as interim head coach at Michigan State during Mark Dantonio's health-related absence in 2010. He later served as the head coach at Miami (Ohio) from 2011 to 2013, posting an 8-21 record.
