Arizona State's Ball retires from football because of seizures

Sep 7, 2017 - 4:01 AM Arizona State senior safety Marcus Ball announced on Wednesday that he will retire from football as he continues to battle what he termed uncontrollable epileptic seizures.

Ball declared his decision on Twitter, noting that he has been dealing with the seizures for three years.

"I want to make clear that I am now retiring from football so I can live a better quality of life," Ball wrote. "My health and family are first in my life, but I make it clear that Arizona State University has put me in a position as well as it can do with others to succeed in life!"

Ball finished second on the team with 64 tackles last season, highlighted by a career-high 10-tackle performance in the Sun Devils' 23-20 win over UCLA. He also had an interception in that game.

Ball was listed as the backup at both safety positions on the team's official depth chart prior to Arizona State's season opener against New Mexico State last week. He did not play, however.
