Southern Cal falls in AP poll

Oct 1, 2017 - 7:30 PM The top four teams remain the same in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll released Sunday but last week's No. 5 team plummeted downward.

Southern California fell from fifth to 14th, stemming from Friday's 30-27 loss to Washington State. The defeat halted the Trojans' 13-game winning streak.

USC's loss opened the door for Georgia to move up two spots to No. 5. The Bulldogs routed Tennessee 41-0 on Saturday.

Alabama remained atop the poll, followed by Clemson, Oklahoma and Penn State.

The Crimson Tide slipped from 52 first-place votes last week to 44 despite demolishing Mississippi 66-3. Clemson received the other 17 first-place votes.

Washington remained at No. 6. Michigan checked it at No. 7, followed by TCU, Wisconsin and Ohio State.

Washington State moved up five spots to No. 11 after its victory over USC. The outcome marked the Cougars' first win over a Top 10 team since 2003. Washington State's 5-0 start is also its best since winning its first seven games in 2001.

Auburn (12th) and Miami (13th) follow the Cougars.

Oklahoma State remained at No. 15 and Virginia Tech is 16th, the latter dropping four spots after losing to Clemson.

The next four were the same as last week: Louisville (17th), South Florida (18th), San Diego State (19th) and Utah (20th).

Notre Dame and Florida are tied at No. 21, and West Virginia is 23rd.

North Carolina State is No. 24 after cracking the poll for the first time since 2010. Also making the poll for the first time this season is Central Florida (25th). It is UCF's first appearance in the poll since 2013.

Dropping out of the poll were Mississippi State and LSU. The Bulldogs were trounced 49-10 by Auburn, and LSU suffered a 24-21 home loss to Troy. It was just Troy's second-ever win over a Top 25 program.

The SEC dropped from six teams to four with the departures of Mississippi State and LSU. The ACC has the most teams with five.
