Iowa St.'s Lanning plays both ways; Cyclones stun Oklahoma

Oct 7, 2017 - 8:23 PM NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Iowa State's Joel Lanning played both offense and defense against No. 3 Oklahoma and helped the Cyclones pull off a 38-31 stunner on Saturday afternoon. Lanning started the game at middle linebacker, then entered at quarterback with about four minutes left in the first quarter. He finished with 35 yards rushing and 25 yards passing, and had eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery on defense. He became the first Iowa State player since Dave McCurry in 1971 to get significant action playing both ways in a game, according to the Des Moines Register. "It was fun," Lanning said. "Coming into an atmosphere like this, you can't ask for anything better, especially playing both ways. ... I can't say enough about my teammates and what they did to help me out. It was a lot of stuff going on for me. I didn't have my best game defensively, but we got the win." Lanning has 14 career starts at quarterback. Last season, he completed 99 of 170 passes for 1,290 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He shifted from quarterback to linebacker during the offseason. The senior ranked second in the Big 12 and fifth in the nation in tackles per game heading into Saturday's contest. Lanning's role for Saturday changed because starting quarterback Jacob Park went on leave for undisclosed medical reasons.
