Sep 17, 2021 - 10:04 AMA pair of former rivals will face off Saturday in Norman as the Nebraska Cornhuskers come to town to play the #3 ranked Sooners. Despite being nearly two decades since then, both of these programs know what this game once meant and are doing everything their power to make it even close to as relevant.
As for the game itself, we have two teams trending in opposite directions since that rivalry was a rivalry. Will Saturday reflect that?
Let’s take a closer look.

Overview
While the Scott Frost era has been anything but stellar thus far, he likely avoided being fired mid-week after winning (and covering) at home vs. Buffalo in Week 3 following a blow loss to Illinois to start the season. Currently sitting at 15-21 through four seasons, Frost is yet to secure a signature win and currently sits 0-7 vs. ranked foes.
A large part of his lack of success thus far rides on his quarterback; Adrian Martinez. After a freshman season that had him as a Heisman hopeful heading into his sophomore campaign, Martinez has struggled mightily. Not much has changed so far this season, completing just 50% of his passes in his only real test (Illinois).
As for the Lincoln Riley area in Norman, the opposite can be said. While developing two Heisman winners, Riley has gotten his Sooners to the CFP in four of the last five seasons and hopes he has the squad to do it yet again. A week 1 scare vs. Tulane prompted the Sooners to beat the breaks off of Western Carolina (76-0) last week, with Saturday being their last real test before BIG 12 play begins.

Trends
- The Cornhuskers are 5-2 ATS over their last seven games
- The Under is 6-2 over the Cornhuskers and Sooners last eight matchups
Bottom Line
When I said Saturday would be a test for the Sooners, I didn’t quite mean that literally. Looking at the quarterbacks, defenses, and coaching staffs, Oklahoma holds major edges in all three categories and after week’s 1 near embarrassment, I expect a focused team looking to make a statement as a top-four team in the country.
Pick: Oklahoma -22
