Florida looks to roll past I-AA Western Carolina

Nov 14, 2006 - 10:16 PM Western Carolina (2-8) at No. 3 Florida (9-1), 12:00 pm EST

GAINESVILLE, Florida (Ticker) - After surviving a brutal Southeastern Conference schedule with just one loss, Florida should have no problem handling a Division I-AA team.

Having completed conference play, the third-ranked Gators play their final home game of the season vs. Western Carolina on Saturday.

The Gators (9-1) needed some heroics from Javaris Moss to finish league play with a 7-1 mark. The 6-6 Moss blocked an extra-point attempt in the fourth quarter and then a 48-yard field-goal attempt by Ryan Succop on the final play of the game in a 17-16 victory over former coach Steve Spurrier and South Carolina at "The Swamp" last weekend.

True freshman quarterback Tim Tebow ran for a go-ahead 12-yard touchdown with 3:03 left for Florida, which already had clinched the SEC East Division and a spot in the conference title game. A loss to South Carolina would have eliminated the Gators from the national championship picture.

Western Carolina (2-8) began its season with back-to-back victories but has not won since.

The Catamounts slipped to 0-7 in Southern Conference play with a 31-9 loss to first-place Appalachian State last Saturday. Bennett Swygert completed just 7-of-16 passes for 126 yards in the defeat.

The teams will be meeting for the first time, but Florida is 22-2 all-time against Southern Conference opponents.
