College Football Week 1 Same Game Parlay: Notre Dame vs. Ohio State (2022)

Sep 3, 2022 - 10:45 AM

The game of the weekend goes down on Sunday with a top-5 matchup as Notre Dame goes into Columbus to take on Ohio State.

Each of these teams brings a different game plan they want to execute, and we’ll see which comes out on top.

Both teams have National Championship aspirations, and a win today would be great on the resume to help them play going into the CFB Playoffs.

No. 5 Notre Dame vs. No.2 Ohio State

  • Leg 1: Ohio State -17.5 (-105)
  • Leg 2: Over 59.5 (-110)
  • Leg 3: CJ Stroud over 345.5 passing yards (-114)
  • Leg 4: TreVeyon Henderson over 88.5 rushing yards (-114)

The Buckeyes have high aspirations after what you could call a disappointing 2021. Last year’s No. 1 offense was a win over Michigan from the CFB playoffs, and it possibly could have earned CJ Stroud the Heisman Trophy.

The offense lost wide receivers Chris Olave and Garett Wilson as they left for the NFL, but look out for Marvin Harrison Jr. and Julian Flemming as they are great candidates to fill those roles.

Stroud still has his leading receiver from last season, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, along with running back TreVeyon Henderson, who was heavily involved in the passing game with 32 catches and 332 receiving yards last year.

No one should believe there will be any regression from this offense.

New Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman immediately gets a big test in his first full season. He has to replace a few key spots on offense, including starters QB Jack Coan, RB Kyren Williams, and leading receiver Kevin Austin Jr.

Last year’s backup, Tyler Buchner, will move into the starting role. He has some in-game experience, but it was late clean-up duty. Last year’s backup running back, Chris Tyree, is listed first on the depth chart, but don’t be surprised if we see a lot of Logan Diggs in the backfield, and Lorenzo Styles will be the leading receiver.

Buchner will have a very valuable target in tight end Michael Mayer. He is also coming into the season as the favorite to take home the John Mackey Award and potentially be the top tight end taken in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The key storyline is how will Freeman’s top-15 scoring defense do against a high-powered Buckeyes offense with some of the best talents in the country?

The Fighting Irish need to excel in the trenches. Keeping Henderson contained and making the Buckeyes one-dimensional could keep this game close. Unfortunately, as great as ND is on their defensive line, Ohio State returns a stellar offensive line that is great in pass and run protection. Henderson’s skill should allow him to get those big plays.

Ohio State’s ability to run the ball opens up many options for Stroud in the passing offense. They love to run the play-action deep posts, and with defenses keeping players in the box, it allows one-on-one matchups. I do not doubt Stroud gets a few of these looks throughout the game.

Realistically, Notre Dame will have to keep them under 20 points to stay in this game. Unfortunately, the last time that happened was in 2017.

Buchner and this offense are not going to be able to compete in a shootout, but realistically, no team in this country could.
