Arizona State vowing not to look ahead to Georgia

Sep 13, 2008 - 10:07 AM UNLV (1-1) at No. 13 Arizona State (2-0), 10:00 pm EDT

TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Thirteenth-ranked Arizona State will try not to get caught looking ahead on Saturday when it hosts Nevada-Las Vegas.

A showdown against second-ranked Georgia looms next week, but quarterback Rudy Carpenter insists the Sun Devils are only thinking about the Rebels.

"That's one of the things Coach (Dennis) Erickson has done since he's gotten here, which is just really take one game at a time and one day at a time," Carpenter said. "I know it's clich?? and everyone says it, but Coach Erickson really means it."

Last week, Carpenter passed for 345 yards and three touchdowns as Arizona State coasted to a 41-17 victory over Stanford in its Pac-10 Conference opener.

Carpenter has thrown for a school-record 733 passing yards in the first two games of the season while climbing to ninth on the Pac-10's all-time touchdowns list with 69.

The only negative last week was Arizona State having to twice settle for field goals after driving inside Stanford's 10-yard line.

"If we want to win big games and close games, we have to score when we get down there," Carpenter added.

UNLV (1-1) is playing its second straight ranked opponent after falling at Utah, 42-21, last week. The Rebels were held to 83 total yards in the second half after forging a 14-14 tie at halftime.
