College Football Week 5 Early Odds, Picks & Prediction: LSU vs. Auburn

LSU EDGE BJ Ojulari, nickel Jay Ward and S Major Burns all missed the win over New Mexico.

Ojulari’s absence was described as precautionary. He probably could have played with his patella injury had a stronger opponent been on the schedule. Ward almost assuredly could have. He was fully dressed and went through warmups. The team expects both back against Auburn.

Burns is another story. According to the staff, his neck injury will take another three-six weeks to heal. Without Burns and Ward against New Mexico, secondary depth was perilously low – but that wasn’t an issue since the Lobos can’t pass.

With Ward likely returning this week, and LSU getting transfer Joe Foucha back following a four-game academic suspension, the Tigers should be fortified on the back end. And let’s be honest:  Auburn doesn’t scare anyone through the air.

It appears that HC Brian Kelly also removed QB Jayden Daniels and RB Armoni Goodwin from Saturday’s game for precautionary reasons. Kelly said Daniels is fine after tweaking his back, while Goodwin has been deemed “day-to-day” with a hamstring injury.

Auburn, meanwhile, might get QB TJ Finley back for this matchup against his former school. A shoulder injury caused Finley to miss last Saturday’s 17-14 win over Missouri. Raw youngster Robby Ashford started against Mizzou and will again against LSU if Finley is out. Ashford is a good runner, but a rough passer at this point in his development.

But Auburn is expected to be without starting C Tate Johnson for the rest of the season following a left elbow injury. Johnson entered the starting lineup unexpectedly just before the season opened when sixth-year C Nick Brahms retired from football. Auburn’s interior depth has become legitimately problematic.

What is Betting Against the Spread?

Betting “against the spread” refers to the act of choosing the winning team based on a numeric handicap placed on the team that oddsmakers believe is superior, rather than picking the outright winner. For example, if the Rams face the Bengals, and oddsmakers set the spread at Rams -3.5, you would need Los Angeles to win by 4 or more points in order to cash your Rams bet.

What is an Over/Under Bet?

Over/Under is a wager based on how many points you think will be scored in a specific game. Oddsmakers set the total, and bettors decide whether the final score will be higher or lower than that number. If an Over/Under is set at 44.5 points and you bet Over, you will need the combined score of both teams to be 45 points or higher to win your bet.

What is a Moneyline Bet?

A moneyline bet involves choosing which team you believe will win a specific matchup. The moneyline favorite carries a minus designation, like -130. This means that you need to wager $130 to earn a $100 profit. Conversely, the underdog carries a plus designation, like +110. This means that you win $110 in profit on a $100 bet.
