Conference play is heating up across the college football landscape, with at least two games under each team’s belt. Let’s take a closer look at two such matchups I’m keyed in for week 6.

Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Rutgers Scarlett Knights Under 49  (-110)

The first game of the Big Ten Conference’s week begins one day earlier on Friday when Nebraska visits Rutgers in New Jersey.  The visiting Cornhuskers (2-3, 1-1) have won all five games of the series, most recently triumphing on the road on Dec. 18, 2020. Since that time, however,  Nebraska has lost six straight games and hasn’t won away from Lincoln. Nebraska recently ended a nine-game losing streak to FBS opponents with a 35-21 victory over Indiana at home, as interim head coach Mickey Joseph got his first “W.”

Rutgers (3-2, 0-2) has struggled in conference play after going unbeaten prior to Big Ten competition. The Scarlet Knights have so far suffered home losses to Iowa (27-10) and Ohio State (49-10) in the preceding weeks. To this point,  the Scarlett Knights have only managed to score 58 points in their last four FBS contests.

Even while the total has already decreased, I don’t believe it has gone so far enough for two atrocious offensive units to go above it.

NC State Wolf Pack -3 (-110) vs. Florida State Seminoles

On Saturday night in Raleigh, two ACC rivals will square off after each team suffered its first loss last week. A bounce back here for one team will be critical moving forward.

Despite not making a strong enough effort to ever be in the game, the Wolfpack’s 30-20 loss to No. 5 Clemson was the more honorable defeat of the two teams. Devin Leary, the NC State quarterback, struggled all day long to maintain consistency. He finished the day with 245 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Jordan Travis has been the Seminoles’ star quarterback this year, passing for 1,226 yards and eight touchdowns through five games. Treshaun Ward, a running back who averages 6.5 yards per carry and has a season total of 437 yards and three touchdowns, is another dependable option for the Seminoles.

FSU has undoubtedly improved, but I believe that last week’s loss to Boston College exposed their deficiencies much more, and NC State responds strongly in this game.
