McCoy stars as Texas blasts Arkansas

Sep 28, 2008 - 2:46 AM AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- A two-week postponement was not enough extra time for Arkansas to prepare for Colt McCoy and Texas' potent offense.

McCoy threw three touchdowns passes and ran for two more as seventh-ranked Texas routed Arkansas, 52-10, on Saturday.

It marked the third time this season that the Longhorns (4-0) have scored 52 points in a game. In a matchup that was rescheduled after Hurricane Ike postponed the game originally scheduled for September 13, Texas dominated.

"I'm proud of our guys, they did not worry about the game being moved, which was an inconvenience for both teams," Texas head coach Mack Brown said. "I thought both teams played hard and played well."

McCoy completed 17-of-19 passes for 185 yards and added 84 yards on nine carries. The junior had a pair of touchdown runs in the second quarter to stake Texas to a 31-3 halftime lead.

"Give credit to the offensive line, they gave me a lot of time" McCoy said. "They played great today. Going into the game, our goal as an offense was to win in the trenches. If the line could win in there, it would give us some time and let us run the ball. Give them the credit, they played great today."

The Longhorns, who have outscored their opponents, 198-43, in four lopsided victories, figure to climb the rankings after a weekend full of upsets.

Among them were No. 1 Southern California, which was knocked off by Oregon State on Thursday, and fourth-ranked Florida, which was upended, 31-30, by Mississippi on Saturday.

"The only thing that matters to us is just that we keep winning games," Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley said. "We're not going to concern ourselves with what the rankings are, who says we're good, who says we're not good, we don't care. We're just going to try to go play every week and keep winning ballgames."

After Hunter Lawrence opened the scoring with a 34-yard field goal, McCoy connected on one of his two touchdown passes to Shipley, this one from 8 yards, to give the Longhorns a 10-0 lead.

"We have to give a lot of credit to their football team," Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino said. "They have a very good football team. Their quarterback was very impressive. He can throw the ball, run the ball, but most of all, it was just the way he ran their operation and executed their offense."

Cody Johnson, who added 43 yards on nine carries, added a 1-yard plunge less than a minute into the second quarter for his fourth rushing touchdown in as many games.

The Razorbacks (2-2) got on the board with Shay Haddock's 30-yard field goal, but McCoy scampered in from 35 yards out midway through the quarter and found the end zone on a 5-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds remaining in the half to extend the bulge to 28 points.

Shipley caught eight passes for 83 yards and Quan Cosby added a 13-yard touchdown reception.

Texas' defense dominated the line of scrimmage, holding Arkansas to 11 yards rushing on 26 carries and tallying seven sacks. The Longhorns' offense was equally as impressive, amassing 208 yards on the ground on 50 carries.

"They (the defense) have played hard and relentlessly," Brown said. "When they gave up a big play, they did not get their heads down. They are getting after the quarterback and he does not get to stand back there very long."

Casey Dick completed 7-of-13 for 138 yards, but was sacked six times. Tyler Wilson came on and completed 7-of-15 for 42 yards and an interception.

The Razorbacks were held without a touchdown until Antwain Robinson returned a fumble 80 yards for a touchdown with two minutes remaining.
