Virginia Tech looks to keep offense rolling
Oct 4, 2008 - 10:06 AM Western Ky (2-3) at (24) Virginia Tech (4-1), 1:30 pm EDTBLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- It took four weeks, but Virginia Tech has worked its way back into the top 25. The Hokies also finally may have their offense back on track.
The 24th-ranked Hokies seek their fifth straight win Saturday when they host Western Kentucky in their final non-conference contest.
Virginia Tech (4-1) is coming off its best offensive showing of the season, a 35-30 victory at Nebraska in which it scored on six straight possessions during one stretch.
With 13 plays of 10 or more yards, the Hokies gained a season-high 377 yards of total offense, running for 206 yards and throwing for 171.
Sophomore Tyrod Taylor, who was initially slated to be a redshirt this season, completed 9-of-15 passes for 171 yards, nearly surpassing his passing total from the past three games combined (199). He also added 87 yards on the ground.
"We worked on the passing game all week and guys made catches all week," Taylor said. "We had a chance to go out there and execute plays, and that's what we did."
The Hokies, who have won four straight since a season-opening 27-22 loss to East Carolina, would like to keep their offense in high gear before returning to Atlantic Coast Conference play at Boston College on October 18.
In its final season before making a jump to the Sun Belt Conference, Western Kentucky (2-3) is playing this year as an independent.
The Hilltoppers are coming off a 41-3 loss at Kentucky, one of their four games this season against BCS conference schools. They also lost to Indiana (31-13) and Alabama (41-7).
Western Kentucky quarterback K.J. Black was held to just eight yards passing against Kentucky and sacked four times.
