Oklahoma State looks to avoid letdown against Baylor
Oct 18, 2008 - 10:15 AM Baylor (3-3) at (10) Oklahoma State (6-0), 3:00 pm EDTSTILLWATER, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- News flash - Oklahoma State can play defense.
Fresh off its upset victory at Missouri, the 10th-ranked Cowboys hope to avoid a letdown Saturday when they host Baylor in a Big 12 Conference contest.
Oklahoma State (6-0, 2-0 Big 12 South) also will try to avoid looking ahead to a showdown against Texas, the new No. 1 team in the coaches' poll, on October 25.
In a conference that features five of the top-six scoring teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision, Oklahoma State opened some eyes with its 28-23 win over then-No. 2 Missouri.
The Cowboys became the first team to slow down the Tigers this season, holding them more than 25 points below their season average.
Entering the game, Missouri did not have a single three-and-out in 49 possessions this season. But the Cowboys intercepted Heisman Trophy candidate Chase Daniel three times.
Oklahoma State is off to only its third 6-0 start in school history and the first since 1987. The Cowboys have climbed into a three-way tie with Texas and Texas Tech atop the Big 12 South.
Oklahoma State will not take Baylor lightly in what could be a trap game with the Longhorns on the horizon for the Cowboys.
Baylor (3-3 1-1 Big 12 South) snapped a 13-game conference losing streak last week with a 38-10 drubbing of Iowa State.
Freshman quarterback Robert Griffin completed 21-of-24 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns. His .875 completion percentage established a Baylor single-game school record.
Griffin has provided a spark for the Bears, throwing nine touchdowns this season without an interception. He also has rushed for a touchdown in six consecutive games, Baylor's longest streak since 1995.
In its first season under coach Art Briles, Baylor, which has endured 12 straight losing campaigns, already has matched last year's win total.
However, Baylor started 3-1 in 2007, then lost its final eight games, leading to the firing of coach Guy Morriss.
