South Florida looks to win at Louisville for first time

Oct 25, 2008 - 10:35 AM (14) South Florida (6-1) at Louisville (4-2), 3:30 pm EDT

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Coming off a loss, South Florida had the perfect homecoming opponent last week in Syracuse.

But the now the 14th-ranked Bulls head to a place that has not been kind to them as they visit Louisville on Saturday in a Big East Conference clash.

South Florida leads the brief series against Louisville, 3-2, with the home team winning all five games.

Last season, the Bulls routed Louisville, 55-17, at home, forcing seven turnovers and holding Cardinals quarterback Brian Brohm to a season-low 213 yards.

However, South Florida has been outscored by a combined 72-17 in two visits to Louisville, including a 31-8 defeat in 2006, when the Cardinals sacked Bulls quarterback Matt Grothe six times.

At least the Bulls have some momentum as they prepare for their third trip to Papa John's Stadium.

With 16 days off following a 26-21 to Pittsburgh on October 2, South Florida (6-1, 1-1 Big East) got back on track last week with a 45-13 drubbing of Syracuse.

Grothe threw three touchdown passes as the Bulls out-gained the Orange, 273-9, in the second half while outscoring them, 24-0.

Louisville (4-2, 0-1) stepped out of conference last week to beat Middle Tennessee State, 42-23.

It was not all pleasant for the Cardinals, however, as they had to rally from a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter. Middle Tennessee took advantage of two interceptions by Hunter Cantwell, who passed for only 144 yards, to grab the early lead.

The Cardinals dropped their only previous Big East game this year, suffering a heartbreaking 26-21 loss to Connecticut on September 26.

With Louisville holding a 21-19 lead, UConn linebacker Lawrence Wilson returned Cantwell's interception 45 yards for a touchdown with 2:45 remaining.
