Texas coach Brown closing in on 200 wins
Nov 15, 2008 - 11:29 AM (5)Texas (9-1) at Kansas (6-4), 12:30 pm ESTLAWRENCE, Kansas (Ticker) -- Texas head coach Mack Brown is closing in on a milestone.
Brown, who has won at least nine games in 13 straight seasons dating to his tenure at North Carolina, seeks his 199th career victory Saturday when the fifth-ranked Longhorns visit slumping Kansas.
The veteran Longhorns mentor is tied with Dana Bible for 19th place on the all-time wins list for coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Texas (9-1, 5-1 Big 12 South) rebounded from its crushing 39-33 loss at Texas Tech to rout Baylor, 45-21, last week. The Longhorns reached reach nine wins for the 11th straight season - the longest active streak in the country.
Texas also won its 829th game in school history, tying Notre Dame for second on the all-time list.
Colt McCoy threw five touchdown passes against Baylor, one shy of a career high, also set against the Bears as a freshman in 2006.
"You want to get the bad taste out of your mouth after a loss, especially when you were the No. 1 team in the country with so many things riding on it, and you get beat on the last second of the game," Brown said.
If Texas wins its final two games against Kansas and Texas A&M, the Longhorns would have a shot for an at-large berth in a BCS bowl.
However, Texas needs help to get to the Big 12 championship game. The Longhorns are tied with Oklahoma for second place in the Big 12 South - one game behind undefeated Texas Tech.
Probably the best scenario the Longhorns can hope for is a three-way tie with Texas Tech and Oklahoma, which means the Sooners would have to beat the Red Raiders next week.
In the event of a three-way tie, the tiebreaker would be determined by the highest ranking in the BCS standings. Texas (third) is currently ahead of Oklahoma (fifth).
Kansas (6-4, 3-3 Big 12 North) has dropped three of its last four games, including a 45-35 loss at Nebraska last week.
Trailing Missouri by one game in the Big 12 North, the Jayhawks likely need to pull an upset this week to keep alive their conference title hopes.
After winning a school-record 12 games last year, Kansas has been victimized by a difficult schedule this season, falling to a pair of top-10 teams in Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
However, the Jayhawks suffered a bad loss last week. Their defense has collapsed, allowing a combined 153 points in the last three defeats.
