Report: It’s down to Pitt or Duke for the Sun Bowl
Dec 2, 2022 - 7:29 PMThe consensus amongst Pitt Twitter seemed pretty locked in on where they did not want their Pittsburgh Panthers to play during this bowl season. The Sun Bowl provokes bad memories highlighted by the 3-0 game against Oregon State that was highlighted by minimal offense and scoring. Unfortunately for Panther fans, the Sun Bowl seems to have narrowed down their choices and Pitt is one of them.
KTSM.com’s Colin Deaver reported that Pitt is one of the two ACC teams in consideration for playing in the 2022 Sun Bowl according to Sun Bowl Executive Director Bernie Olivas.
“In the Pac-12 there’s still some scenarios that could possibly happen, but I think it’ll come down to UCLA or Oregon State and in the ACC it’s Pittsburgh or Duke,” Olivas said. “It’s looking like we’ll have at worst a 9-3 team from the Pac-12 and at worst an 8-4 team from the ACC which would be one of the best matchups we’ve had in years.”
Overall Pitt is 2-2 in their history in the Sun Bowl. The Panthers won their first two games back in 1975 and 1989 but have not been able to replicate that success in the new millennium. Pitt lost in 2018 to the Stanford Cardinals 14-13 besides their tough game against the Oregon State Beavers.
While Pitt fans may stress that the Panthers are down to the final two it still is no sure thing. Pitt has been linked to numerous bowl games in recent projections including the Military Bowl and the Pinstripe Bowl among others.
All eyes will be checking on updates on where Pitt may play their postseason game, whether it’s at the Sun Bowl or a baseball stadium remains to be seen.
