Kumwenda back for Tactix next season

May 28, 2014 - 2:22 AM Ace shooter Mwai Kumwenda will be back with the Mainland Tactix next year in the trans-Tasman netball league.

The 1.93-metre Malawi representative has re-signed with the Christchurch-based franchise after an impressive debut season in the championship.

Kumwenda has been one of the bright spots for the Tactix, who are guaranteed the wooden spoon with a round to go after just one win in 12 matches.

She again bore the shooting load in the 64-60 defeat to the Southern Steel last weekend.

Her 52 goals against the Steel lifted her to top among the competition's most-prolific scorers, with a total of 498 goals from 91.5 per cent shooting.

The first Malawian to play in the league, Kumwenda is relishing the chance to return, saying she is enjoying her time in Christchurch.

"I have a wonderful host family, and it was a very easy decision to come back to my Mainland home next season," she said.

Tactix chief executive Brigit Hearn said Kumwenda was a huge asset and was starting to form great on-court combinations, especially with captain and goal attack Anna Thompson.

"Mwai is a fabulous player, with a great skill set and wonderful personality, who has adapted well to life here," Hearn said.

"We look forward to seeing her netball skills continue to grow and thrive here in the Netball Mainland environment."
