Extra Tactix import gets netball nod

Jul 11, 2014 - 6:47 AM Canterbury Tactix will again field two import players in next year's trans-Tasman netball league.

It will be the fourth year the Christchurch-based franchise have been granted dispensation for a second import, as they look to rebuild after the 2011 earthquake.

The league's governing body says it's important to continue supporting the Tactix, but their progress will be monitored closely.

The league's general manager Andy Crook said recruiting top players to Christchurch had been a challenge in previous seasons.

"We feel it's in the best interests of the league to ensure the Tactix are able to build a squad capable of challenging the other nine teams in what is the world's most exciting netball league," he said.

The decision will be reviewed annually, he added.

The Tactix finished last this year, ninth the year before and last again in 2012 and 2011.

They have already re-signed Mwai Kumwenda for next season, after the Malawi international's naming as the league's best new talent in her inaugural trans-Tasman season.

Their second import, English international Jade Clarke, has played the past two seasons for the Tactix but has yet to confirm her signing for 2015.

Former Silver Ferns mentor Leigh Gibbs, the Tactix's coach for three years, has retired.

A replacement is yet to be named, although assistant coach Julie Seymour has signalled her interest in the role.
