Raiders beat Browns, lose QB Campbell
Oct 17, 2011 - 2:43 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - The Oakland Raiders defeated the Cleveland Browns, 24-17, but they may have lost their starting quarterback for the rest of the season.Oakland quarterback Jason Campbell was injured in the second quarter and left the game, reportedly with a broken collarbone that could sideline him for the rest of the season, according to NFL.com.
Campbell stretched for a first down after scrambling as Browns linebacker Scott Fujita landed on top of him. The quarterback immediately began clutching his upper right arm when he stood up, and walked gingerly back to the locker room. He was 6-of-9 for 52 yards.
Kyle Boller took over for Campbell and threw for 100 yards on 8-of-14 passing.
"I just tried to let the game come to me versus feeling like I needed to do everything," Boller said. "I felt comfortable toward the end."
Darren McFadden ran for 91 yards and a score on 20 carries for the Raiders (4-2), who have won two straight and three of their last four.
Colt McCoy threw for 215 yards and two scores on 21-of-45 passing for Cleveland (2-3), which has dropped its last two.
"We didn't match their momentum early in the game. It's pretty disappointing," McCoy said. "As a competitor it's hard to look at the positives in a loss. Offensively we didn't play [well]."
Greg Little caught six balls for 72 yards, while Montario Hardesty ran for 35 yards on 11 carries.
Peyton Hillis continues to have his carries reduced as he ran for just 14 yards on six carries. He ran for 46 yards on 10 carries in Cleveland's last game against the Titans two weeks ago.
Mohamed Massaquoi hauled in a 12-yard score from McCoy with 1:06 to play to make it a 24-17 game.
Phil Dawson executed a perfect onside kick as it took a high bounce off the grass and into the hands of a leaping James Dockery at the Raider 49-yard line. It initially appeared that Josh Cribbs touched the ball before the 10- yard mark that the ball must travel, but after further review, the replay showed that Cribbs did not touch the ball.
But the Raider defense stepped up and sealed the win as Massaquoi was unable to hang on to McCoy's pass on 4th-and-3 with 33 seconds left.
The Raiders marched 88 yards on 15 plays as McFadden concluded Oakland's opening drive with a four-yard touchdown run. McFadden totaled 50 yards on seven carries on the possession which took 7:48 off the clock.
Cleveland capitalized on a Campbell fumble on Oakland's next possession as McCoy found Alex Smith for a one-yard score to tie the game. Cribbs picked up a 3rd-and-6 with a 23-yard reception to highlight the drive.
But Jacoby Ford responded with a career-high 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as he tip-toed his way down the right sideline for the score.
Sebastian Janikowski increased Oakland's lead to 17-7 late in the third quarter after he booted a 48-yard field goal through the uprights. Boller hooked up with Ford for a 27-yard completion on a 3rd-and-7 to set up Janikowski's kick.
Oakland's Tommy Kelly recovered a McCoy fumble on the second play of Cleveland's ensuing drive after he lost grip of the ball as he was trying to hand it off to Hardesty. The Raiders took over at the Browns' 25-yard line.
After it looked like the Raiders would settle for three, Oakland used a bit of trickery to take a 24-7 lead. Shane Lechler got the field-goal snap, rose up, and fired a strike to Kevin Boss, who rumbled in for a 35-yard score with 1:23 to go in the third.
Cribbs' 31-yard punt return to the Oakland 42 set up Cleveland's next score. Dawson nailed a 47-yard field goal to make it a 24-10 game with 12:24 remaining in the fourth.
Oakland turned the ball over on downs on its ensuing possession when Bush was unable to pick up a 4th-and-1 at Cleveland's five-yard line. But the Raiders did take 7:40 off the clock on their 12-play, 60-yard march as Cleveland took over with just 4:44 to play in the game.
Game Notes
McFadden's league-leading 610 yards rushing is the most in Raiders' team history after six games...Ford's kickoff return for a touchdown was the fourth of his two-year career...Cleveland's recovered onside kick was the first since December 6, 2009 in a game against the San Diego Chargers.
