49ers outlast SeahawksOct 19, 2012 - 6:46 AM San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Delanie Walker's touchdown catch in the third quarter proved to be the winning score as San Francisco took a 13-6 win over Seattle in a tough battle at Candlestick Park.
Frank Gore provided most of the yards for the 49ers (5-2) as he totaled 131 yards on 16 carries and added five catches for 51 yards to help the team bounce back from last week's rout at the hands of the Giants.
Alex Smith was 14-for-23 with 140 yards, one touchdown and one interception while David Akers kicked a pair of field goals for San Francisco, which moved into the top spot in the NFC West with the victory.
"I was expecting a close, physical game because that's how both our games were last year," Smith said. "I didn't expect a big stat game, but this was a really tough one that we had tonight. This is a very satisfying win for the whole club."
Russell Wilson had a rough game as he was just 9-for-23 with 122 yards and an interception for the Seahawks (4-3), who had won their previous two coming in. Marshawn Lynch totaled 103 yards on 19 carries and had a 13-yard catch in the loss.
"The way we lost was frustrating. We could have done some things better," Wilson said.
Seattle started the second half with the ball and a three-point lead, but had to punt shortly after crossing midfield.
The Niners started with the ball at their own 14 and the first play saw Gore take a catch 15 yards. Gore added 35 more yards on the drive and on 2nd-and-7 at the Seattle 12, Walker caught the ball to the left and got a foot in the end zone for a 10-6 lead with 4:29 left in the third.
The first turnover of the game came on the Seahawks' next possession as Wilson went deep and was picked off by Dashon Goldson.
San Francisco was poised to add to its advantage as the team got into the red zone, but a poor pass into the end zone by Smith was nabbed by Brandon Browner. He brought it out of the end zone, though, and Seattle was pinned at its 3-yard line.
A 16-yard punt return by Ted Ginn gave San Francisco the ball just past midfield and a 20-yard run by Gore helped the team get a 28-yard field goal from Akers with 5:24 to play.
Seattle had to punt after getting just one first down and held the 49ers to a three-and-out, but had to burn the rest of its timeouts and got the ball back at its own 11.
On 4th-and-17, Wilson hit Ben Obomanu and appeared to cross the first down marker, but he was ruled just short. On the play, a flag in the end zone on a chop block gave the 49ers a safety, but the team opted not to accept the penalty and just killed the rest of the clock.
San Francisco moved past midfield on the opening drive of the game, but ultimately had to punt and pinned Seattle at its own 4-yard line.
The Seahawks were able to get out of trouble on their first play as Wilson hit Michael Robinson for a 12-yard play. The team wound up running 10 plays and moving 63 yards with Steven Hauschka hitting a 52-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 5:29 left in the first quarter.
The 49ers answered on their ensuing touch as the team moved 60 yards over 11 plays and Akers tied it with a 38-yard boot through the uprights with 26 seconds left in the first. The team converted a 3rd-and-10 early in the drive when Smith and Gore got together on a 12-yard catch.
Seattle came right back down the field to take the lead as Hauschka hit a 35- yard field goal for a 6-3 advantage with 12:07 to play in the second. The big play of the drive saw Wilson go deep down the right sideline for a 36-yard strike to Obomanu.
Following a three-and-out from the 49ers, the Seahawks got past midfield and Hauschka lined up for a 51-yard field goal attempt, but it went wide left and it remained a three-point game.
Neither team was able to get into scoring position the rest of the half as the teams went into the locker room with Seattle holding the lead.
San Francisco held the ball for 32:01 thanks to 175 yards on the ground ... The 49ers have won four straight against the Seahawks and now lead the series, 14-13 ... San Francisco has off until Oct. 29 when it will play in Arizona on Monday night ... Seattle plays in Detroit next Sunday ... Obomanu led Seattle receivers with three catches for 50 yards.
