San Fran routs San Diego in preseason finale
Aug 31, 2012 - 5:31 AM San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Colin Kaepernick threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-18 passing as the San Francisco 49ers thumped the San Diego Chargers, 35-3, in the preseason finale for both teams.Josh Johnson threw for 125 yards and two scores on 9-of-14 passing and Anthony Dixon led the way on the ground with 55 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries for the 49ers, who open their regular season on September 9 at Lambeau Field against the Packers.
Nathan Palmer hauled in three passes for 72 yards and a touchdown, while A.J. Jenkins, Garrett Celek and Delanie Walker each caught touchdown passes.
Philip Rivers played a little less than one quarter and completed 8-of-10 passes for 89 yards and an interception, while Jackie Battle gained 35 yards on 10 carries for the Chargers, who open the season on "Monday Night Football" September 10 against the Oakland Raiders.
The 49ers opened the scoring on their first possession of the game as Kaepernick took the offense 66 yards in 11 plays before Dixon broke through the line for a 1-yard touchdown push.
San Francisco extend its lead to 14-0 when Kaepernick connected with Walker on a 32-yard touchdown pass with just over six minutes left in the first quarter.
Early in the second frame, the 49ers struck again as Kaepernick hit Jenkins from 12-yards out for the touchdown and a 21-point advantage.
The San Francisco offense kept rolling in the third quarter, putting up 14 more points to extend the margin to a comfortable 35-0.
Johnson connected with Palmer for a 51-yard touchdown strike midway through the frame and Celek for a short 3-yard score at the end of the quarter to give the 49ers the huge lead.
Mike Scifres got the Chargers on the board early in the final quarter when he connected on a 27-yard field goal.
