Losman throws three TD passes, Bills post shutout

Dec 18, 2006 - 12:37 AM ORCHARD PARK, New York (Ticker) -- J.P. Losman kept the Buffalo Bills' slim playoff hopes allowed. Joey Harrington passed the Miami Dolphins' hopes right down the drain.

Losman threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns on a windy day at Ralph Wilson Stadium and the Bills completely stymied the Dolphins, 21-0, to complete a sweep of their AFC East rivals.

Willis McGahee added 79 yards rushing on 28 carries for Buffalo (7-7), which has won five of its last seven and recorded its first shutout since September 7, 2003 against New England.

"The character that we've talked about all year, I believe it's there," Buffalo coach Dick Jauron said. "They play as a team more and more. Hopefully we can keep it going. We know it's just going to get harder, but I think they like the challenge, they like it."

Losman continued his stellar play against Miami. He completed 13-of-19 passes, including three TD tosses of more than 20 yards, and did not throw an interception. Losman now has seven TDs and one interception in three career starts against the Dolphins.

"J.P., as we've said all year, has steadily improved," Jauron said. "He deserves credit. He knows he can play better and he knows that we all need to play better, but it was a big win for us."

While Losman was picking apart the Dolphins' secondary, Harrington was horrible. He completed just 5-of-17 passes for 20 yards with two interceptions before being pulled for Cleo Lemon in the fourth quarter.

"Joey didn't have one of his best days today," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said. "It was tough for him with the conditions out there today. I'm sure he doesn't feel good about the way he played today. We want to support him and help him. He's played well for us."

Losman found Robert Royal on a 33-yard score down the right sideline with 4:40 left in the first half and hooked up for 27 yards with Josh Reed with 8:06 remaining in the third. Reed caught the ball in the left flat at the 22 and broke several tackles to make it 14-0.

Losman capped the scoring with a 21-yard TD pass to Lee Evans with 11:21 left in the game to cap the scoring.

"He has grown a lot, you can see just in his film study," Evans said. "When he comes up and talks to you about different looks they have, different fronts on what they want to do. You can see him starting to get it; you can see it starting to come."

Miami (6-8) was shut out for the first time since a 22-0 blanking by Cleveland on November 20, 2005. The Dolphins were coming off a 21-0 victory over New England.

The Dolphins managed five first downs in the opening period, but had two drives stalled inside Buffalo territory.

"We run the ball every play, all the way down there for two drives and we came out with nothing," Harrington said. "Normally, we would have kicked a field goal if the wind wasn't into us, but that's part of this game, just managing the weather. We didn't cash in when we had to."

On their first possession, the Dolphins marched down the field, but failed to convert on a 4th-and-4 from the Buffalo 31 when Wes Welker was dropped after a two-yard gain on a pass from Harrington.

On its next drive, Miami reached the Buffalo 24, but Sammy Morris was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 run.

"Really, huge, huge plays," Jauron said. "The first, but especially the second one on fourth and short. They're all huge, but it's hard to stop anything 3rd-and-1, 4th-and-1, the percentages are not with you. So it was great and it was definitely a huge part of the game."

Morris finished with 71 yards on 20 carries

Evans caught three passes for 67 yards, including a 37-yard bomb from Losman down the left sideline that set up the first score.
