Jackson enjoys another big game to lead Rams

Dec 31, 2006 - 10:25 PM MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Steven Jackson put an exclamation point on his huge season.

Jackson rushed for three touchdowns and caught another score to lead the St. Louis Rams to a 41-21 rout of the Minnesota Vikings in the season finale for both teams.

Eliminated from playoff contention after the New York Giants won at Washington on Saturday night, the Rams (8-8) garnered a .500 finish under first-year coach Scott Linehan by closing with a three-game winning streak.

"It was a good way to end the season," Jackson said. "We caught stride a little bit too late, but this is something we definitely can build off of."

Jackson was a major reason for the Rams' late-season success as he finished with eight touchdowns in the final three games to give him a total of 17 on the campaign.

On Sunday, Jackson scored on runs of four, two and 59 yards to go along with a 10-yard touchdown reception. His TD catch with 1:15 left in the first half gave the Rams a 27-7 bulge.

Jackson rushed for 142 yards on 25 attempts against the NFL's top-ranked run defense and had two catches for 24 yards. He finished the season with 1,528 rushing yards and 90 catches for 806 yards.

"I was hoping for 1,600 yards rushing and a 2,000-yard season overall," Jackson said. "I accomplished a lot of things, 1,600 yards was a goal of mine, I didn't get there, but it's nothing to be down about. You shoot for the moon and you never know what happens."

"He's a Pro-Bowl running back, he's big, he's got speed, quickness, he's good," Vikings linebacker Napoleon Harris said.

It was a disappointing finish for the Vikings (6-10), who lost eight of their final 10 games under first-year coach Brad Childress.

"Disappointed in that game," Childress said. "Fourteen points off turnovers. It's tough to put your defense on a half field."

Making his second career start, Vikings rookie Tarvaris Jackson passed for a touchdown and rushed for a score. He also threw two interceptions, one of which was returned 38 yards for a TD by safety Ronald Bartell less than two minutes into the contest.
