Seahawks ride Lynch, defense against 49ers

Sep 16, 2013 - 6:17 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Marshawn Lynch scored three touchdowns and Seattle's defense picked off Colin Kaepernick three times, as the Seahawks made a statement with a 29-3 win over the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers.

Lynch carried the ball 28 times for 98 yards and two scores while catching three passes for 37 yards and a touchdown for the Seahawks (2-0), who needed a late touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to secure a 12-7 win over the Panthers in Week 1.

Wilson completed 8-of-19 passes for 142 yards, one touchdown and an interception for Seattle, which is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2006.

A record-setting crowd contributed to the winning effort, as the announced attendance of 68,338 marks the largest ever for a Seahawks game at CenturyLink Field. The gathering set a Guinness World Record for crowd noise. Seahawks fans broke the previous world record of nearly 132 decibels, set in 2011 during a soccer match in Turkey, then broke their own record -- setting the new mark of 136.6 decibels.

"What an amazing night! Unbelievable. I've never heard a crowd like that," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said.

Kaepernick connected on 13-of-28 passes for 127 yards for the 49ers (1-1), who beat the Packers by a 34-28 margin last week. The San Francisco signal-caller, who threw for 412 yards and three touchdowns in Week 1, also carried the ball nine times for 87 yards.

"We're not going to win games if I play like that," Kaepernick said. "There were a couple of balls I tried to force in there."

Anquan Boldin, who caught 13 passes for 208 yards and a score against Green Bay, was limited to one catch for seven yards.

San Francisco turned the ball over five times and committed 12 penalties for 121 yards.

After going three-and-out on offense to start the game, the 49ers got a big play from their special teams unit. Craig Dahl blocked Jon Ryan's punt and San Francisco took over at the Seattle 33. Carroll tried to argue that someone in the stands blew a whistle during the play, but all the refs did was listen.

Kaepernick led San Francisco to the five before being picked off by Earl Thomas. However, Wilson followed with a mistake of his own when he was intercepted by Eric Reid.

Severe weather delayed the game for one hour with 3:13 left in the first quarter.

The first points of the game came on a safety in the early stages of the second stanza. 49ers fullback Bruce Miller was called for offensive holding in his own end zone, resulting in two points for Seattle.

Golden Tate returned the ensuing kick 24 yards to the 49-yard line. The series stalled when Wilson was stopped on 4th-and-1.

On the ensuing San Francisco possession, defensive end Cliff Avril sacked Kaepernick and forced a fumble. K.J. Wright fell on the ball at the 29 of the 49ers. The home team, though, had to settle for a 30-yard Steven Hauschka field goal to make it 5-0 with 5:52 left.

The Seahawks started the second half with a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive. Doug Baldwin caught a 51-yard pass on third down to put Seattle inside the red zone. A few plays later, Lynch capped the march with a 14-yard TD run.

The 49ers responded with a nice drive of their own, but only got a field goal. Kaepernick's 28-yard run and Vance McDonald's 19-yard catch put the ball at the 10. Seattle, though, did not break on defense and Phil Dawson made a 21- yard field goal, cutting the gap to 12-3.

The Seahawks then bridged the third and fourth frames with a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive. A defensive pass interference penalty on Nnamdi Asomugha gave the home team a quick 40 yards. Another huge penalty hurt the 49ers after Zach Miller caught a 15-yard pass on 3rd-and-28. Aldon Smith was called for unnecessary roughness on the final play of the third quarter.

The 49ers brought a blitz on 3rd-and-4 from the seven, but Wilson found a wide-open Lynch for an easy score.

Richard Sherman picked off Kaepernick on the ensuing San Francisco possession. The Seahawks got a 37-yard field goal from Hauschka to make it 22-3 with 11 1/2 minutes to play.

"We did what we expected us to do," Sherman said.

Kam Chancellor added an interception later in the stanza, which led to another Lynch touchdown run.
