Forte, Bears down Chargers
Aug 16, 2013 - 3:43 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Matt Forte carried the ball eight times for 74 yards and a touchdown as the Chicago Bears downed the San Diego Chargers, 33-28, in the second week of preseason action.Michael Bush had 11 carries for 37 yards and a score and Brandon Marshall had four catches for 38 yards and a touchdown for the Bears, who enter their first season under head coach Marc Trestman. Jay Cutler completed 4-of-5 passes for 38 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the victory.
Ryan Mathews rushed for 45 yards on nine carriers and Ladarius Green caught five pases for 78 yards and a touchdown for the Chargers, who also enter their first season with a new head coach in Mike McCoy.
Philip Rivers was 5-for-9 passing for 50 yards and Charlie Whitehurst completed 9-of-13 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bears struck first as Cutler found Marshall for a five-yard touchdown pass with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Forte's three-yard TD plunge in the closing minutes of the first gave the Bears a 14-0 advantage.
Robbie Gould split the uprights from 23 and 25 yards out late in the first half to make it 20-0, but Fozzy Whittaker pushed forward from three yards out to make it 20-7.
Whitehurst's 12-yard touchdown pass just under four minutes into the third quarter pulled the Chargers within 20-14, but the Bears answered on the ensuing drive as Bush bulled his way into the end zone from three yards out to make it a two-possession game.
Whitehurst found Mike Willie for a two-yard touchdown later in the third to pull San Diego within sox points, but Gould knocked a 28-yarder through early in the fourth to give the Bears a 30-21 lead.
Brad Sorensen connected with Willie on a six-yard touchdown pass near the midway point of the fourth, but it would be as close as the Chargers would get.
Sorenson finished the game 8-for-14 passing for 126 yards.
Gould's 48-yarder with 46 seconds left accounted for the final difference.
