Jaguars rally in fourth to edge Falcons

Sep 16, 2007 - 10:25 PM JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Falcons continue to struggle on offense while this time, the Jacksonville Jaguars found just enough to win.

David Garrard threw a touchdown pass and John Carney converted a short field goal in the fourth quarter as the Jaguars outlasted the Falcons, 13-7, on Sunday.

The Jaguars (1-1) trailed 7-3 entering the fourth quarter. They took the lead with 10 minutes to play after Garrard capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a 14-yard TD pass to Reggie Williams.

"We were doing a decent job running the ball, but it got to a point where we knew we had to start putting the ball in the air," Garrard said. "The coaches felt it, we felt it and we knew we could do it. We just had to go out there and execute."

Carney added a 27-yard field goal just over three minutes later to make it 13-7, and the Falcons could not generate any offense down the stretch.

Jacksonville opened the scoring on a 35-yard field goal by Carney early in the second quarter. Atlanta answered and took a 7-3 lead on a four-yard TD run by Warrick Dunn.

It was the first, and only, TD of the season for the Falcons (0-2), who are reeling to start the new campaign. They endured a 24-3 loss at Minnesota last week.

"It's not discouraging, its frustrating. There's a difference," Harrington said. "Discouraging would imply that we don't believe in what we're doing or we don't believe in ourselves. We know we can move the ball. It's a matter of finishing off those drives."

Pushed into the starting quarterback job in the wake of federal dogfighting charges against Michael Vick, Joey Harrington continues to show he's not the answer. He completed 12-of-20 passes for 200 yards without a TD or interception and was sacked seven times.

The Jaguars barely topped their week one output, 10 points, but it was enough against the inept Falcons.

"Obviously, it was a situation where we needed to find a way to win, somehow, someway," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said.

Garrard completed 17-of-25 passes for 272 yards and Fred Taylor ran for 56 yards on 16 carries.
