Young benched as Titans fall to Redskins
Aug 12, 2007 - 3:35 AM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Tennessee Titans might have known it was not their night when quarterback Vince Young was benched for a violation of team rules.Minus their second-year standout, the Titans could not generate much offense and fall to the Washington Redskins, 14-6, in a preseason game Saturday night.
The Redskins didn't do much on offense either, but struck for a pair of touchdowns in the final 3:02 to claim the victory.
Young, the NFL offensive rookie of the year last season, set virtually every rookie passing record for Tennessee in 2006.
In his place, Kerry Collins played the entire first half, but didn't enjoy much success as he led the Titans to a 3-0 lead after two quarters. He completed 10-of-17 passes for 79 yards.
Jason Campbell, the Redskins' third-year quarterback, also played the entire first half but couldn't get Washington on the scoreboard. He completed 6-of-14 for 104 yards and lost one fumble after being blindsided by Vincent Fuller on the game's first possession.
Tennessee's Cortland Finnegan made one of the biggest plays of the first half when his 37-yard punt return to the Washington 28 set up a 41-yard field goal by Rob Bironas with 5:24 left in the first quarter.
Tim Rattay came in at quarterback for Tennessee at the start of the second half and Mark Brunell entered the game at the same time for Washington, but both teams were shut out in the third quarter as the defenses continued to dominate.
John Vaughn, who played high school ball near Nashville at Brentwood Academy, boosted the Titans' lead to 6-0 with a 39-yard field goal with 9:19 left. The former Auburn standout redeemed himself after going wide right on a 27-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.
Clinton Portis sat out for Washington and his backup, Ladell Betts, rushed for just six yards on four carries.
Rookie Chris Henry carries 12 times for 42 yards for Tennessee.
It could be another dismal preseason for the Redskins, who went 0-4 in exhibition games last year - getting outscored, 104-27 - en route to a 5-11 regular season.
The strong defensive showing was encouraging for the Titans, who had one of the NFL's lowest-rated defenses in 2006.
