Henry provides spark as Broncos edge 49ers
Aug 14, 2007 - 3:14 AM Tom Kent PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - Travis Henry made a good first impression.
Henry ran for a touchdown in his first game for his new team as the Denver Broncos defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 17-13, in the preseason opener for both teams Monday night.
Henry, who was signed by Denver as a free agent in the offseason after spending the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans, played the first series and rushed for 27 yards on five carries and scored the first touchdown of the game.
The Broncos' offense looked sharp on their first possession. Henry capped an eight-play, 67-yard scoring drive with a one-yard run to give Denver an early 7-0 lead.
Denver quarterback Jay Cutler also played the first series and completed 1-of-2 passes for 24 yards. Cutler, the Broncos' No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft, also added a 16-yard run that set up Henry's score.
Niners starting quarterback Alex Smith played the first two series and completed 4-of-5 passes for 58 yards, including a 26-yard completion to Arnaz Battle that set up a one-yard touchdown run by Michael Robinson.
Denver backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey connected with fullback Troy Fleming on a three-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter for a 14-10 lead. Ramsey completed 4-of-10 passes for 45-yards.
San Francisco kicker Joe Nedney converted field goals of 28 and 37 yards in the first half.
