Croyle looks good, but Dolphins win in Green's return
Aug 17, 2007 - 3:16 AM By Marc Bowman PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - The Kansas City Chiefs got a glimpse of their past and future at the quarterback position.
Brodie Croyle led the Chiefs to their lone touchdown on his first series, but Patrick Cobbs scored late and rookie quarterback John Beck ran in a two-point conversion as the Miami Dolphins notched an 11-10 win in Trent Green's return to Kansas City on Thursday.
Green, the former Chiefs and current Dolphins quarterback, received a mixed reception from the fans in his return and started out shaky. The 14-year veteran misfired on his first two passes and watched as fullback Cory Schlesinger dropped another in the Dolphins' first series.
The quarterback spent six seasons in Kansas City and left unceremoniously. He suffered a severe concussion in Week 4 against Cincinnati and was then traded to Miami.
Green settled down on his second series, completing all four passes for 41 yards to lead the Dolphins (2-0) on a nine-play, 64-yard drive. The drive stalled at Kansas City's 3-yard line when Jesse Chatman was stopped on fourth-and-goal.
Ronnie Brown looked good on the drive, carrying eight times for 29 yards, and racked up 57 yards on 13 carries for the game. Brown also carried four times for 21 yards on an eight-play, 40-yard drive led by Cleo Lemon. Kicker Jay Feely capped the drive with a 30-yard field goal with 14:59 left in the second quarter.
Croyle made his case to be the team's starter on his first drive, completing 5-of-6 passes for 68 yards on an 8-play, 70-yard scoring drive. He hit Chris Hannon over the middle for a 21-yard touchdown to put the Chiefs up 7-3 with 3:44 left in the second quarter.
However, while Croyle showed promise, he also showed his youth. In his second drive, the second-year quarterback from Alabama lofted a pass off his back foot toward the end zone into zone coverage and was intercepted by Michael Lehan.
Croyle finished 8-for-11 for 82 yards with a score and an interception.
His competition, Damon Huard, completed 3-of-5 passes for 26 yards as the Chiefs (0-2) managed just two first downs and 47 yards in their first three drives.
Rookie Marcus O'Keith and Michael Bennett combined to carry 15 times for 29 yards for the Chiefs in the absence of holdout Larry Johnson.
