Giants absorb injuries in win over Ravens
Aug 20, 2007 - 3:40 AM By Mike McGeehan PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterBALTIMORE (Ticker) - In a penalty-laden preseason game, the New York Giants defeated the Baltimore Ravens, 13-12, in front of 70,754 fans at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore Sunday night.
Eli Manning led the Giants by going 10-for-13 for 114 yards in five series and connecting with rookie wide receiver Steve Smith for the game's only touchdown - a 10-yard pass early in the second quarter for a 7-3 lead.
Manning also hit tight end Jeremy Shockey for 18 yards in the eight-play, 80-yard drive. Smith suffered a concussion on the touchdown catch but his injury was the least severe for New York.
Wide receiver Michael Jennings ruptured an Achilles tendon and is lost for the season. Free safety Will Demps dislocated an elbow and is expected to be out three to four weeks, while cornerback Sam Madison pulled a hamstring.
Jennings was starting in place of Plaxico Burress, who did not play.
Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was 5-for-8 for 29 yards in the first quarter. Even less impressive was new running back Willis McGahee, who ran for only three yards in six attempts.
Kicker Matt Stover struck first for the Ravens, hitting from 33 yards out to put them ahead, 3-0. He also connected later in the second quarter from 47 yards out and is 7-for-7 so far this preseason.
Giants rookie Josh Huston had a 50-yard field goal early in the fourth to give New York a 10-6 lead and added a 30-yarder with 5:57 left in the fourth, making it 13-9.
The Giants had a total of 12 penalties for 111 yards; the Ravens were no better with 11 for 66 yards.
Giants running back Brandon Jacobs ran for 23 yards in six attempts while backup Reuben Droughns rushed for 11 yards in six carries - also in the first quarter.
Backup running back Mike Anderson was the Ravens' only running threat in the first half, rushing for 37 yards in only three carries.
Baltimore had two key injuries. Starting cornerback Samari Rolle was hurt in the first quarter with a right ankle injury and wide receiver Mark Clayton suffered the same injury. X-rays were negative for both players and neither returned.
The Ravens had a total of six sacks.
