Quarterbacks shine as Browns edge Broncos

DENVER (Ticker) -- All three quarterbacks looked sharp and the defense held on as the Cleveland Browns defeated the Denver Broncos, 17-16, in their preseason game Saturday night.

Browns starting quarterback Charlie Frye was 5-for-7 for 68 yards, leading the Browns to a touchdown on their opening possession.

Frye drove the Browns 80 yards in 11 plays, including a 24-yard pass to Braylon Edwards that moved the Browns inside the Broncos' 10-yard line. Jamal Lewis capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown for an early 7-0 lead.

Backup quarter Derek Anderson was 7-for-9 for 78 yards before giving way to rookie Brady Quinn, who played most of the second half.

One of the team's two first-round picks, Quinn finished the night 7-for-11 for 81 yards and a touchdown. He hit Josh Cribbs for a 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter to finish off a 37-yard drive, which began after the Browns recovered a fumble by Broncos backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey.

Denver starting quarterback Jay Cutler was 9-of-16 for 115 yards and one touchdown, finishing his night midway through the third quarter.

Cutler executed a perfect two-minute drill to end the first half, completing four passes for 44 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Johnson that tied the score at 10-10.

With running backs Travis Henry and Mike Bell taking the night off to nurse some injuries, the Broncos relied on rookie Selvin Young and veteran Cecil Sapp to carry the load. Young finished with 91 yards and a touchdown while Sapp rushed for 54 yards.

The Browns' defense stopped Young on a two-point conversion with just under three minutes left, then held off a late Broncos' drive with under a minute remaining to seal the win.
