Campbell impressive in Redskins' loss to Jaguars
Aug 31, 2007 - 2:16 AM JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) -- Jason Campbell's knee appears to be fine.Campbell, who was playing for the first time since suffering a bruised right knee in the second preseason game, was perfect in his one series in the Washington Redskins' 31-14 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the preseason finale for both teams on Thursday.
Campbell was 5-of-5 for 54 yards in leading the Redskins to a touchdown on their first drive, showing he will be ready for the regular season opener against the visiting Miami Dolphins on September 9.
The Redskins went 70 yards on eight plays, capped by Campbell hitting Antwaan Randle El for a 23-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
As expected, Washington tailback Clinton Portis did not play. Portis, who returned to practice for the first time in four weeks on Tuesday, had been out with tendonitis in his right knee.
Jaguars backup quarterback David Garrard continued his solid preseason, completing 7-of-10 passes for 77 yards and leading the team to a 51-yard field goal by Josh Scobee that cut the lead to 14-3 with 11:45 left in the second.
Garrard has completed 36-of-47 passes for 379 yards and one touchdown this preseason, putting pressure on starter Byron Leftwich to produce.
Leftwich did not play and was unimpressive in the first two preseason games completing 12-of-28 passes for 148 yards. The injury-prone Leftwich led the team to just two touchdowns and a field goal in 14 possessions.
Still, Leftwich will be under center when the Jaguars host the Tennessee Titans in the season opener on September 9.
Mark Brunell, who returned to Jacksonville for the first time since playing nine years there, was impressive in his bid to win the No. 2 quarterback job with Washington.
Competing with Todd Collins, Brunell completed 5-of-6 passes for 47 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Hoag to put Washington up, 14-3, in the second quarter. Collins did not play.
