Stars get night off as Rams top Chiefs
Aug 31, 2007 - 3:13 AM By Chip Sotolar PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Rams defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 10-3, on Thursday in the final preseason game for both teams, which was dubbed the "Governor's Cup."
The contest featured mostly second- and third-string players as both coaches decided to keep their starters on the sidelines.
Rams coach Scott Linehan kept all three of his main offensive weapons on the bench for this one. Quarterback Marc Bulger, running back Steven Jackson and wide receiver Torry Holt all were in uniform but saw no action.
Jackson, who led the NFL with 2,334 total yards last year, finished the preseason with two receptions and zero carries.
Damon Huard - who was recently named the Chiefs' starting quarterback - was kept out of the game by coach Herman Edwards, while two-time All-Pro running back Larry Johnson was limited to one series in which he gained 12 yards on three rushes.
"It was good to get in the game and get a couple of carries," said Johnson, who ended his holdout and reported to training camp on August 21. "That's the toughest adjustment, getting back in the speed of the game and getting your timing down with your offensive linemen."
Backup Gus Frerotte moved the Rams 52 yards on 11 plays on the first drive of the game, which resulted in a 36-yard field goal by Kevin Lovell. Frerotte played two series and finished 11-of-12 for 97 yards.
St. Louis finally found the end zone in the third quarter as Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a 20-yard strike over the middle to Marques Hagans giving the Rams a 10-0 lead.
Justin Medlock, who missed a 52-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter, hit a 40-yarder with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth for the Chiefs to prevent the shutout.
Brodie Croyle played the first two series for Kansas City, going 1-of-4 for 15 yards before giving way to Jeff Terrell. The rookie completed 15-of-25 passes for 117 yards.
