Falcons down Ravens in preseason finale
Sep 1, 2007 - 3:02 AM ATLANTA (Ticker) -- With nearly every starter for both clubs watching from the sidelines, the Atlanta Falcons edged the Baltimore Ravens, 13-10, on Friday in the final preseason game for both teams.Willis McGahee was Baltimore's only offensive starter to see action, rushing for 12 yards on four carries. Former starter Kyle Boller solidified his backup quarterback role, completing 9-of-15 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown in the first half.
The offense struggled again for Baltimore (1-3), scoring just one TD. The Ravens scored only one touchdown in their previous preseason game against the Washington Redskins after not visiting the end zone at all against the New York Giants a week earlier.
Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith tried to cement his role as the third-string quarterback, completing 11-of-18 passes for 86 yards and one interception after taking over for Boller to begin the second half.
Smith, who led Ohio State to the national championship game last season, was slotted into the third quarterback position when Drew Olson was cut on Monday. However, coach Brian Billick elected to go with two quarterbacks last season, and could do the same in 2007.
Smith led a 12-play, 44-yard drive which resulted in a 55-yard field goal by rookie Rhys Lloyd. The kick gave Baltimore a 10-7 lead with 4:15 left in the third quarter.
Casey Bramlet, who took over for Chris Redman as the Falcons' quarterback, responded by leading a 14-play, 79-yard drive that was capped by Matt Prater's 33-yard field goal, tying the game at 10-10 with 9:49 left to play.
Bramlet went 4-of-7 for 68 yards while leading two scoring drives.
A 45-yard field goal by Prater on the Falcons' next possession gave them a 13-10 lead with 3:29 remaining.
Redman started the game for Atlanta, completing 13-of-23 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown in three quarters of play.
The Ravens opened the scoring with 7:13 left in the first quarter, when Boller hit Demetrius Williams down the right sideline for a 59-yard touchdown on the first play of the drive.
The Falcons (3-1) responded with a 10-play, 74-yard drive capped by a 16-yard touchdown catch by Jerious Norwood.
Norwood, who was the only Falcons starter to receive playing time, rushed for 11 yards on seven carries while catching three passes for 29 yards and a score.
