Stars sit as Bengals beat Colts
Sep 1, 2007 - 4:04 AM CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The Cincinnati Bengals hosted the Indianapolis Colts in the final pre-season game without the starting quarterback for either team plying a down. Both Peyton Manning of Indianapolis and Carson Palmer of Cincinnati watched from the sideline as reserves from both teams auditioned for jobs and the Bengals scored twice in a 21 second span of the third quarter and held on for a 14-6 win on Friday.
With two of the league's most prolific passers sitting out, offense was hard to come by.
Cincinnati didn't pass the Indianapolis 30 until the 7:46 mark of the third quarter during a drive that was capped by a five-yard TD run by Quincy Wilson with 5:28 left in the third.
Cincinnati's punter, Kyle Larson, kicked the extra point because kicker Aaron Elling injured his right knee making a tackle on the second half kickoff. Elling was replacing Shayne Graham who suffered a hip pointer Monday in a game against Atlanta.
Larson also converted an extra point after linebacker Caleb Miller returned a fumble 46 yards for a TD.
Both teams finished the preseason 1-3. The Colts open defense of their Super Bowl title Thursday against New Orleans and the Bengals face Baltimore on September 10.
