Fading Chiefs look to revive playoff hopes
Dec 23, 2006 - 4:45 PM Kansas City (7-7) at Oakland (2-12) 8:00 pm ESTOAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Chiefs will need a lot of help to reach the playoffs this season. They can help themselves with a win over a familiar foe.
The Chiefs aim to revive their fading postseason hopes when they visit the Oakland Raiders on Saturday night in a clash between AFC West Division rivals.
Since grinding out a 19-10 victory over the Denver Broncos on Thanksgiving, Kansas City has lost three straight games and trails four 8-6 teams - Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Denver and the New York Jets - in the wild-card race.
The Chiefs struggled offensively for the second consecutive week in a 20-9 loss at San Diego last Sunday night.
Trent Green was sacked six times by the Chargers while Larry Johnson managed just 84 yards on 19 carries for Kansas City, which has scored a total of just 19 points in its last two games.
The Chiefs look to bounce back Saturday night against an Oakland team which is an abysmal 2-21 against divisional foes the last four years, including 0-5 this season.
In the first meeting between the division rivals this season, Johnson rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns as the Chiefs posted a 17-13 victory on November 19. The second touchdown - a one-yard run - came with just 1:32 left in the fourth quarter and put the Chiefs ahead for good.
Rookie safety Jarrad Page intercepted Aaron Brooks in the end zone with 26 seconds remaining to seal Kansas City's seventh straight win against the Raiders. The wins are by a combined total of 32 points.
Oakland has dropped seven in a row overall and equaled its most losses in a season since owner Al Davis joined the franchise in 1963.
The Raiders have been shut out three times this season, including a 20-0 loss here to St. Louis last week, and are averaging a league-low 11.1 points per game.
Oakland and the Detroit Lions are tied for the worst record in the NFL and the top overall pick in the draft.
The Raiders hope that Randy Moss will return on Saturday. The five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver missed last week's game with an ankle injury. Moss has just 42 catches for 553 yards and three touchdowns this season.
