Newton makes NFL debut; Panthers defeat Giants
Aug 14, 2011 - 4:48 AM Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Cam Newton threw for 134 yards in his Panthers debut, while Jimmy Clausen and Derek Anderson both passed for touchdowns, leading Carolina to a 20-10 preseason victory over the Giants. The three players are battling for starting quarterback duties and Newton, the top overall pick in this year's draft, played the second and third quarters, and a series during the fourth in his professional debut. He completed only 8- of-19 passes but helped the Panthers drive for two field goals.
Clausen, a second-round pick in the 2010 draft and Carolina's primary quarterback last season, opened the game for the Panthers.
He had an interception returned for a 56-yard touchdown by Michael Boley on the first series, but rebounded to throw an 18-yard scoring strike to Greg Olsen later in the quarter. Clausen finished 4-for-7 for 69 yards.
The veteran Anderson, signed earlier this month, completed 3-of-4 passes for 71 yards during the fourth quarter.
Included among Anderson's throws was a 35-yard TD strike to Kealoha Pilares that provided the only points of the second half.
Giants starting quarterback Eli Manning played into the second quarter, completing 4-of-9 passes for 36 yards. Sage Rosenfels got the bulk of the snaps under center for New York and passed for 129 yards on 13-of-19 completions.
Domenik Hixon caught five passes for 86 yards, but the Giants' offense couldn't push the ball across the goal line. Lawrence Tynes also made just 1- of-4 field goals, missing from 56 and 37 yards out, and having a 44-yarder blocked.
After Boley's return put the Giants on the board, Clausen's TD pass to Olsen knotted the game in the middle of the quarter.
Newton took over less than a minute into the second and showed flashes of talent. He completed two passes during his first series, including a 30-yarder to Olsen that got the ball inside the 10-yard line.
But his two incompletions on the next set of downs forced Carolina to bring out Olindo Mare for a 26-yard field goal. Newton completed a few more throws late in the half, leading to a 39-yarder from Mare.
Newton -- a noted passing and running threat during his Heisman Trophy-winning season last year at Auburn -- also didn't record any rushing attempts.
