Raiders kick their way past Bears
Nov 28, 2011 - 2:09 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Sebastian Janikowski set a Raiders record by kicking six field goals, and AFC West-leading Oakland snapped a two-game skid at home with a 25-20 victory over the Chicago Bears.Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer completed 21-of-37 passes for 301 yards and was picked off once. Michael Bush had 69 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown on 24 carries for Oakland (7-4), which earned its third straight win.
"I'm very excited about a lot of good things that happened. We need to continue to get better and we will," said Oakland head coach Hue Jackson.
Making his first NFL start in place of the injured Jay Cutler, Caleb Hanie finished with 254 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions for the Bears (7-4), who were aiming to win six in a row.
Cutler fractured the thumb on his right throwing hand while trying to make a tackle on an interception return in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's 31-20 triumph over San Diego.
Robbie Gould kicked two 50-plus-yard field goals in the fourth quarter to trim Chicago's deficit to 18-13.
On the next Oakland drive, Palmer converted a 3rd-and-6 from his own 30 with a 14-yard toss to Chaz Schilens. Facing another third down from midfield, Palmer hooked up with Louis Murphy for a 47-yard reception, setting up Bush's score with 3:47 remaining.
Johnny Knox responded with a 81-yard catch-and-run on 3rd-and-16 on the ensuing Chicago possession. Two plays later, Hanie found Kellen Davis for a nine-yard touchdown with 2:11 to play.
The Raiders recovered an onside kick and were forced to punt. Chicago, though, was unable to move across the 50 as time ran out.
"When you're on the road, you can't turn the ball over the way we did," said Chicago head coach Lovie Smith.
Oakland's first drive of the game ended with Janikowski nailing a 40-yarder. The Raiders picked off Hanie on consecutive possessions later in the first quarter, but came away with only a 47-yard Janikowski field goal.
After a Bears punt gave Oakland the ball at midfield, Palmer had a pass tipped and intercepted. Chicago succeeded where Oakland had failed by converting the turnover into a touchdown.
Hanie scrambled for 24 yards on 3rd-and-18 from his own 45, then threw a 29- yard touchdown pass against the blitz to Knox on 3rd-and-8.
However, the lead was short-lived as a short toss to Marcel Reece went for 47 yards and set up Janikowski's 42-yard field goal.
Although he initially struggled to handle the ball on the ensuing kickoff, Knox ran 56 yards to the Oakland 35. Chicago was looking to accumulate points, marching to the seven, but Kamerion Wimbley intercepted Hanie's pass and rumbled 73 yards. A 19-yard Janikowski field goal gave the Raiders a 12-7 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Janikowski was good from 37 and 44 yards to stretch Oakland's advantage to 18-7.
