Feely's FG in overtime lifts Cardinals over Browns
Dec 19, 2011 - 3:59 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Jay Feely connected on the game-winning 22- yard field goal in overtime, sending the Arizona Cardinals to a 20-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals began the game-deciding drive on the Browns 40 thanks to a 32- yard punt return by Patrick Peterson. On 3rd-and-6, John Skelton found a wide- open Larry Fitzgerald for a 32-yard completion down to the Cleveland four-yard line, setting Feely up for the chip-shot winner on first down.
Skelton ended his day with 313 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 28-of-46 passing in place of Kevin Kolb, who missed the game after sustaining a head injury in the Cardinals' 21-19 win over the San Francisco 49ers last week.
Andre Roberts had six receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown, while Todd Heap hauled in seven passes for 69 yards for the Cardinals (7-7). Beanie Wells ran for 51 yards and a score on 15 carries.
Arizona has won four consecutive regular season games for the first time since the 1999 season.
"Obviously, it was a big win for us. We haven't won four games in a row since I've been here so that's a pretty significant deal," Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "To get back to .500 was a big deal for us."
Seneca Wallace completed 18-of-31 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown in place of Colt McCoy, who missed the game with a concussion suffered in a Week 14, 24-10, setback to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Peyton Hillis ran for a season-high 99 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, while Greg Little caught five balls for 131 yards and a touchdown for the Browns (4-10), losers of four straight.
Trailing 17-7 entering the fourth quarter, Arizona pulled to within three with 8:33 to play in regulation when Skelton led an 11-play, 87-yard drive that Wells capped with a one-yard touchdown.
A fumble by Wallace on the ensuing drive gave the Cardinals the ball at the Cleveland five-yard line, but they were unable to push the ball in for the go- ahead score, running three plays for a total of minus-10 yards before Feely connected on a 33-yard field goal to tie the game with 5:40 to go.
The next two possessions saw each team cross midfield, but neither side could reach field-goal range to force the extra period.
"We had them on their heels and when it gets to that point, its about not making mistakes, not turning the ball over and giving them some easy points and making plays," said Wallace. "I need to help us out a lot more and start making some plays for our team."
The Browns wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on the opening possession of the game with an efficient seven-play, 76-yard drive capped by a one-yard push across the goal line by Hillis to put the Browns up 7-0.
Cleveland bridged the first and second quarters with a 15-play, 54-yard march that culminated with a 44-yard field goal from Phil Dawson to put Cleveland ahead 10-0 with less than 12 minutes to play before halftime.
Arizona got the ball with 1:49 to play before the break and on 3rd-and-3, Skelton connected with Heap for 18 yards to bring the ball to the Cleveland 40. Four plays later, Skelton found Chester Taylor for an 11-yard gain to place the ball at the Browns 12. Skelton then hooked up with Roberts on a nine-yard touchdown strike to make it 10-7 with just 19 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Browns extended their lead to 17-7 with three minutes to play in the third quarter thanks to an incredibly athletic play by Wallace. Facing a 3rd-and-8 from the 24, Wallace took the snap and rolled out to his right before throwing back across his body to a wide-open Little for a 76-yard touchdown.
