Vick hurts ribs; Eagles top Patriots
Aug 21, 2012 - 3:42 AM Foxboro, MA (Sports Network) - For a second consecutive week, the city of Philadelphia held its collective breath as Michael Vick exited with another injury.Nick Foles replaced Vick and threw for 217 yards with two touchdowns and an interception as the Philadelphia Eagles downed the New England Patriots, 27-17, in preseason action.
Vick left the contest in the first quarter with a rib injury. While trying to elude pressure in the pocket, Vick backpedaled before firing the ball down the field. Linebacker Jermaine Cunningham, rushing off the left edge, put a big hit on Vick just as he released the ball.
Vick was taken back to the locker room for x-rays, which came back negative. He'll have a CT scan and MRI Tuesday.
The injury comes a week after Vick hurt his left thumb during the Eagles' first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He was 1-of-3 for five yards and carried the ball once for five yards.
"We chose not to bring him back in. He was sore," Eagles coach Andy Reid said.
DeSean Jackson caught four passes for 82 yards and LeSean McCoy gained 30 yards on seven carries for the Eagles.
Quarterback Tom Brady, wide receivers Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd, linebacker Jerod Mayo and defensive tackle Vince Wilfork were among the several healthy scratches for the Patriots. Tight end Rob Gronkowski, who is coming back from offseason ankle surgery, also sat out.
Ryan Mallett got the start at quarterback and completed 10-of-20 passes for 105 yards and a score, while Deion Branch caught three passes for 51 yards.
New England jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the second quarter, but the Eagles responded by tallying 14 straight points.
Stephen Gostkowski nailed a 51-yard field goal midway through the opening frame and Alex Silvestro caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Mallett in the second stanza to cap a 13-play, 80-yard drive. Shane Vereen ran it in for the two-point conversion to make it 11-0.
After a muffed punt by Brandon Bolden, McCoy ran it in from a yard out three plays later. Darryl Tapp then recovered a Brian Hoyer fumble on New England's ensuing drive, which was caused by Phillip Hunt, and Foles found Clay Harbor for a one-yard score to make it 14-11.
Gostkowski booted through a 35-yard field goal on New England's next drive to tie the game.
Harbor hauled in another score from Foles, this time a three-yard hookup, to cap Philadelphia's opening drive of the second half, which gave the visitors a 21-14 lead.
Gostkowski nailed a 55-yard field goal to cut the deficit to four, but Alex Henery booted through field goals of 42 and 21 yards, with the latter coming with two minutes remaining in the game to seal the outcome.
