Lynch, Seahawks rout Cowboys
Sep 17, 2012 - 5:32 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Marshawn Lynch got stronger as the game went along and helped rookie quarterback Russell Wilson notch his first career victory.Lynch carried the ball 26 times for 122 yards, with 100 coming in the second half, and a touchdown as the Seattle Seahawks routed the Dallas Cowboys, 27-7, on Sunday.
Wilson was efficient and completed 15-of-20 passes for 151 yards and a score for the Seahawks (1-1), who dropped their opener to the Arizona Cardinals.
"We can't hurt ourselves, that's what we did last week," Wilson said. "We had great communication today. We messed up a few times, but that's going to happen. We really have to focus in and not make any mistakes, that's our goal. We weren't quite perfect, but it was way better than last week."
Tony Romo was 23-of-40 for 251 yards with a touchdown and interception for Dallas (1-1), which defeated the New York Giants last Wednesday.
Miles Austin caught five balls for 63 yards and a score, while DeMarco Murray was limited to 44 yards on 12 carries in defeat.
The Seahawks, who led 13-7 at halftime, outscored Dallas 14-0 over the final 30 minutes.
On their second possession of the half, Lynch bulled his way for a 36-yard run before Wilson capped the drive with a 22-yard TD pass to a wide-open Anthony McCoy on a seam route.
The workhorse Lynch carried the ball seven times for 34 yards on Seattle's final scoring drive. The 12-play, 88-yard drive concluded when Lynch took a handoff off the left side for a 3-yard score early in the fourth.
Following a Dallas three-and-out, Seattle took 6:28 off the clock as the Cowboys didn't regain possession until just 36 seconds showed on the scoreboard.
Anthony Spencer was called for a 15-yard facemasking penalty on a 3rd-and-6, and Wilson ran for two yards on a 4th-and-1 later in the drive. This came after Seattle lined up to punt on 4th-and-5, but Dallas was called for a 12- men-on-the-field penalty.
"I felt like we were emotionally ready to play the ballgame," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "We gave them opportunities and we fought back, but as the game wore on, they did more things to win the game than we did through all three phases."
Earlier, a pair of Dallas special teams miscues led to 10 Seattle points in the opening frame.
Felix Jones fumbled the opening kickoff, which was recovered by Earl Thomas at the Dallas 29-yard line and led to a Steven Hauschka 21-yard field goal.
Malcolm Smith blocked Chris Jones' punt on the Cowboys' ensuing series and Jeron Johnson returned it three yards for the score.
Dallas, which totaled just 295 yards against a relentless Seattle defense, tallied 95 yards on a 15-play drive for its only score of the contest. Romo had four third-down conversions on the trek before hitting Austin for a 22- yard score, which cut the deficit to 10-7 early in the second stanza.
Hauschka added his second field goal, a 25-yarder, with two minutes to play in the half and made it 13-7.
Game Notes
This was the first meeting between the teams since their wild-card playoff game in 2007, where the Seahawks won due to Romo's botched snap on a field- goal attempt late in the game. Seattle won, 21-20 ... Jason Witten caught four passes for 58 yards for Dallas ... Seattle controlled the time of possession battle, 34:39-25:21.
