Folk's second chance lifts Jets past Dolphins in OT

Sep 24, 2012 - 2:05 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Nick Folk got a second chance and made it count, kicking a 33-yard field goal in overtime to lift the New York Jets to a 23-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium.

After Miami's Dan Carpenter missed from 48 yards, the Jets drove from their own 38 to the Miami 15 with their second possession of the extra period. Mark Sanchez hit Santonio Holmes with a 38-yard pass on the second play to put the Jets in field goal range.

Following a pair of Shonn Greene carries, the Jets set up for Folk's kick. The Dolphins blocked the attempt, but had called timeout just before the snap to give Folk a second chance and he knocked it straight through to give the Jets (2-1) the victory.

"Obviously it looked rough for us there for a while, but we kept hanging in there and like the team we are, we kept fighting until the end," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "We expected to win but my goodness it was tough. In the end we got some breaks, but we'll take it."

Sanchez completed 21-of-45 passes for 306 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions for the Jets, while Holmes finished with nine catches for 147 yards.

Ryan Tannehill threw for 196 yards on just 16-of-36 passing with a costly interception for Miami (1-2), which was coming off a 35-13 home win over Oakland last week. Daniel Thomas and Jorvorskie Lane each ran for a score for the Dolphins, who racked up 185 yards on the ground.

Each team lost a star player to injury, as Miami running back Reggie Bush left just before halftime with a knee injury and Jets superstar cornerback Darrelle Revis injured his left knee on a non-contact play during the third quarter.

Bush was hit in the knee by a helmet during a carry. He had run for 61 yards on 10 carries before departing. Revis was hurt when he went to cut in an effort to make a tackle. He immediately grabbed at his left knee before falling to the ground, then limped off the field.

"We knew it was going to be a physical game coming in and I think it definitely played out that way," Tannehill said.

The Jets trailed 17-13 with 5 1/2 minutes remaining and took over at their own 47. Sanchez hit Holmes for 18 yards on the first play and the two converted 3rd-and-6 with a 15-yard strike a few moments later. On 3rd-and-1 from the seven, Sanchez found Jeremy Kerley in the end zone to cap the 8-play series for the go-ahead score.

The Dolphins had time and drove far enough for Carpenter's 41-yard field goal to tie it with 16 seconds to play. Carpenter, however, also missed from 47 yards away earlier in the contest.

Miami turned a Sanchez interception on the game's opening series into a quick 7-0 lead, as Richard Marshall's pick near midfield led to Thomas' 1-yard plunge. Bush did most of the work on a 47-yard drive with 31 yards on four carries.

Carpenter's 21-yard field goal capped a 75-yard march midway through the second quarter to give Miami a 10-0 lead and the Jets finally countered with a sustained drive on their next series.

After managing a total of 47 yards on their first three possessions, New York was set to punt again with 4th-and-3 from its own 25. However, Tim Tebow was the upback in punt formation and took the direct snap five yards for a first down. It sparked the offense and led to a 33-yard field goal from Folk with 1:50 to play in the half.

The Jets nearly had a chance to add points before the end of the half, ready to take possession just inside Miami territory after a punt with 36 seconds remaining, but a roughing the punter penalty allowed the Dolphins to keep the ball and run out the clock.

Miami had possession to start the second half, but LaRon Landry stepped in front of Anthony Fasano to pick off Tannehill and returned the interception 18 yards for the tying touchdown just 44 seconds into the third quarter.

Thomas then fumbled on the first play after the ensuing kickoff, giving the Jets the ball at the Miami 26 and New York quickly moved inside the five. Tebow entered on second down from the two and was sacked for loss of five yards. He exited in place of Sanchez, who was picked off in the end zone by Chris Clemons to keep the game tied.

After a trade of punts, the Dolphins drove 80 yards in 11 plays for the go- ahead score. An 11-yard reception by Thomas on 3rd-and-9 kept the series alive early and ended Revis' day. Davone Bess added a 14-yard catch to convert another long third down before a 12-yard Fasano reception -- upheld on review -- set up Lane's 1-yard TD run for a 17-10 lead with 1:45 left in the third.

The Jets followed with a 20-yard Folk field goal to trim the deficit to four early in the fourth. A 66-yard catch and run by Kerley set up a first down at the five and a penalty in the end zone moved the ball to the one, but the Miami defense -- with the aid of a Jets false start -- stiffened and forced the kick.

Carpenter missed a 47-yard field goal try on Miami's ensuing possession.

Game Notes

The Jets also lost rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a hamstring injury ... Thomas finished with 69 yards on 19 carries ... Greene had 40 yards on 19 attempts for the Jets, while Bilal Powell led New York with 45 yards on the ground ... The Dolphins had won five of the previous seven meetings, including a 19-17 win in Miami to end last season and deny the Jets a potential playoff spot.
