Defense, special teams lead Panthers over Ravens

Aug 23, 2013 - 3:30 AM Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Ted Ginn Jr. ran back a punt 74 yards for a score and the Carolina Panthers added three defensive touchdowns in a 34-27 preseason win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Drayton Florence and D.J. Moore each ran back interceptions for scores, while Thomas Davis pounced on a fumble for a touchdown.

Two of the defensive TDs came when Joe Flacco was running Baltimore's offense. Flacco completed 18-of-24 passes for 169 yards with a TD and two picks and played into the third quarter. Ray Rice rushed for 62 yards and a score for the defending Super Bowl champions.

Cam Newton finished 10-of-19 for 99 yards through the air for the Panthers.

Rice scored off left guard from a yard out to complete a 69-yard drive that took nine plays to cap Baltimore's opening possession.

Ginn, who owns six return touchdowns (3 kickoffs, 3 punts) over six NFL seasons and finished third in the NFC with a 10.3 average taking back punts while with San Francisco last year, showed off his speed on his punt return for a TD with 5:12 left in the opening quarter. He evaded an early tackle and cut back to the middle before moving to the right sideline on the race to the end zone.

Flacco's pass attempt to Tandon Doss over the middle early in the second quarter was picked off by Florence, who darted 71 yards to put the Panthers up, 14-7.

The Ravens then fumbled the ball away two plays into their next drive. Linebacker Luke Kuechly stripped Bernard Pierce in the backfield and Davis made a sliding recovery while barely breaking the plane of the goal line.

Another drive by Flacco ended in a turnover before the halftime. On 2nd-and-6 from the Carolina 10, Flacco's pass over the middle was picked off by Kuechly.

Graham Gano booted a 54-yard field goal with 37 seconds left for a 24-7 Carolina lead.

Justin Tucker split the uprights from 32 yards out early the third, and Flacco threw his only TD pass of the night to undrafted rookie Marlon Brown, a 24-yard strike over the middle with 7:39 left in the quarter.

Gano booted a 42-yard field goal and Moore stepped in front of rookie tight end Matt Furstenburg to pick off Tyrod Taylor and rumbled 33 yards to the end zone for a 34-17 cushion with 43 seconds to go in the third.

Damien Berry scored on a 10-yard run in the fourth and Tucker nailed a 36-yad kick with 7:10 left, but Carolina ran out most of the remaining time.

A prayer pass from Caleb Hanie near midfield was knocked away close to the end zone on the final play.
