Final
Luck, Colts rout Jaguars
Sep 30, 2013 - 12:57 AM Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - The Indianapolis Colts didn't fall for the trap.Coming off a solid pounding of the defending NFC champion 49ers in San Francisco with a home game next Sunday against another projected Super Bowl contender in Seattle, Colts coach Chuck Pagano placed mouse traps in his players' lockers earlier this week as a reminder that this week's game against Jacksonville was no pushover.
The Colts responded and shook off a sluggish start to claim an easy 37-3 victory over the winless Jaguars at EverBank Field.
Andrew Luck threw for 260 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception for the Colts (3-1), who scored the final 37 points and have won two straight since a Week 2 loss to Miami. Trent Richardson added a short rushing touchdown and Darius Butler returned an interception for a score.
"Definitely, not an ideal start. Probably more of a terrible start to the game offensively for us," Luck said.
The Jacksonville offense was inept for most of the afternoon, as the Jaguars (0-4) opened a season with four straight losses for the first time since 2003.
"We must continue to emphasize competing," said Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley.
The Jaguars, who have never started 0-5, managed just 70 total yards on their first nine offensive possessions before adding 135 on their final three drives with the outcome already determined.
Blaine Gabbert, back as the Jaguars' starting quarterback after a two-week absence because of a hand injury, completed 17-of-32 passes for 179 yards with a trio of interceptions. Maurice Jones-Drew managed a mere 23 yards on 13 carries in defeat.
Indianapolis snapped a 3-3 tie early in the second quarter with a defensive score, as Butler snagged a deflected Gabbert throw and raced 41 yards the other way for a touchdown.
The Colts' offense added to the advantage on their ensuing possession, marching 81 yards on six plays for a touchdown. Donald Brown keyed the set with a 50-yard rumble up the middle and Richardson finished it with a 1-yard run to make it 17-3 with 5:54 left in the half.
Luck had a touchdown pass on Indianapolis' next series negated by a holding penalty and the Colts had to settle for a 46-yard Adam Vinatieri field goal that sent them into the break with a 20-3 cushion.
The Colts added a pair of third-quarter touchdowns in diametrically opposite fashion. Luck needed just two plays for the first, hitting Coby Fleener with a 31-yard scoring toss. He then engineered a 12-play, 72-yard march that ended with a 5-yard TD strike to Reggie Wayne.
A 28-yard Vinatieri field goal in the fourth accounted for the final margin.
The Colts finished with 154 yards on the ground despite the absence of Ahmad Bradshaw. He missed the game with neck discomfort, but Brown had 65 yards on three carries and Richardson finished with 60 yards on 20 attempts. Luck chipped in 26 yards on a pair of scrambles.
Gabbert had a deflected pass intercepted by Vontae Davis in the first quarter. However, Luck, who had an early pick negated by a Jacksonville offside penalty, returned the favor just two plays later.
Will Blackmon came up with the interception at the Indianapolis 41 and the Jaguars advanced the ball just six yards to set up Josh Scobee's 53-yard field goal for the game's first points.
After a trade of punts left the Colts with possession at their own 42 late in the first, Luck directed a drive that included a 17-yard scramble on 3rd-and-9 that set up a 22-yard Vinatieri field goal in the first minute of the second quarter.
Jacksonville had seven possessions in the first half -- none of which lasted more than five plays. The Jaguars have been outscored 75-8 in the opening two quarters this season.
