Jets send Browns to sixth straight loss
Dec 23, 2013 - 12:38 AM East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Geno Smith tossed a pair of touchdown passes to David Nelson and ran for a score as the New York Jets topped the Cleveland Browns 24-13 on Sunday. With the Jets up 17-13 with 3:26 left and facing a 3rd-and-2, Smith was pressured, scrambled and darted through a huge seam up the middle for the game-clinching 17-yard score.
Smith was 20-of-36 for 214 yards for New York (7-8), which had dropped four of its last five games coming in. Chris Ivory ran for 109 yards on 20 carries in the triumph.
Josh Gordon had six receptions for 97 yards, while Edwin Baker carried the ball 17 times for 64 yards and a touchdown for the Browns (4-11), who have lost six straight.
"It's unacceptable. It was a tough game to swallow," Cleveland head coach Rob Chudzinski said.
Cleveland scored the first 10 points of the game before the Jets answered with the next 17.
"They had a stranglehold on us down 10-0, but our guys kept fighting," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said.
Smith's 5-yard TD flip to Nelson finished off a 14-play, 81-yard trek, which gave the Jets a 17-10 cushion with 14:14 remaining. Jeremy Kerley's 17-yard reception on a 3rd-and-13 highlighted the march.
Baker's 2-yard TD run on Cleveland's ensuing possession was nullified when Gary Barnidge was whistled for a false start. The Browns settled for a Billy Cundiff 21-yard field goal, which pulled the Browns within 17-13 with 9:40 left.
The Jets, though, took the next 6:21 off the clock before Smith scampered for his touchdown.
Earlier, Josh Cooper hadn't had a catch all season until he hauled in a five- yard reception on a 4th-and-2 at the New York 35. His reception led to a Cundiff 27-yard field goal at the 6:30 mark of the first quarter.
Cleveland stalled inside the 10-yard line on its next touch. The Browns were rewarded with a 1st-and-goal at the two when Sheldon Richardson was whistled for a roughing the passer penalty. Cleveland didn't capitalize as Gordon was unable to bring in passes on third and fourth down.
The Browns did find the end zone the next time they had the ball. Jordan Poyer returned a punt 29 yards to the Jets' 41, Gordon took a Wildcat handoff from MarQueis Gray for a 22-yard gain and Baker plunged in from five yards out three plays later for a 10-0 Cleveland lead midway through the second.
Smith and the Jets answered with a 13-play, 80-yard sequence. Smith hit Kerley over the middle for a 22-yard gain on a 3rd-and-12, Ivory burst for 21 yards off right tackle a few snaps later and Smith fit a 6-yard TD pass to Nelson in between the linebacker and safety to conclude the march.
The Jets appeared content with running out the remaining 34 seconds of the half when they regained possession at their own 18, but Bilal Powell broke off a 39-yard run up the middle. Tashaun Gipson was later called for an unnecessary roughness flag for hitting Smith out of bounds and Nick Folk split the uprights from 21 yards out to knot the tilt at 10-10 on the final play of the half.
The Browns moved the ball to the Jets' 29 on their first series of the second half, but Dee Milliner intercepted Jason Campbell. Folk, though, missed a 49- yard field goal.
Game Notes
