Cobbs' late TD gives Dolphins' Cameron win in debut

MIAMI (Ticker) - Patrick Cobbs made sure the Jacksonville Jaguars wouldn't spoil Cam Cameron's debut with the Miami Dolphins.

With just 3:50 left, Cobbs scored on a 3-yard run and converted the two-point conversion with a run up the middle as Miami came from behind to defeat Jacksonville, 18-17, in the preseason opener for both teams.

Byron Leftwich and David Garrard each led touchdown drives as Jacksonville led the entire game before Cobbs' heroics. Both teams surprisingly played most of their regulars until early in the second quarter.

Trent Green, who signed with Miami in June, played the entire first half. He only completed 6-of-15 passes for 60 yards, was sacked twice and threw an interception. He was playing behind a revamped offensive line that featured new players at all five positions.

Leftwich, who completed 7-of-10 passes for 78 yards, was sacked twice and hit hard almost every time he dropped back to pass, including a helmet-to-helmet shot from Vonnie Holiday that brought a penalty and extended a drive.

Leftwich ended that 11-play drive with a one-yard touchdown toss to Dennis Northcutt with 12:44 remaining in the second quarter. Josh Scobee connected on a 32-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.

Scobee missed a potential game-winning 43-yard field goal with 46 seconds left.

A fumble recovery by Miami's Jason Allen led to Jay Feely's 26-yard field goal with 39 seconds left in the half.

Garrard, who was 12-of-16 for 153 yards, drove the Jags down the field on the opening drive of the second half, completing all five of his pass attempts for 67 yards, before Alvin Pearman ran in from one yard out to make it 17-3.

Jesse Chatman, fighting for a spot backing up Ronnie Brown in Miami's backfield, answered on the ensuing possession when he slipped one tackler at the line and broke free for a 74-yard TD run.

Tim Couch, trying to make a comeback with Jacksonville after two years out of football, replaced Garrard in the third quarter. He was 2-of-4 for 11 yards.

Cameron, the former offensive coordinator in San Diego, became Miami's coach when Nick Saban bolted back to the college ranks at Alabama after two years coaching the Dolphins.

Miami played without defensive stalwarts Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor, who are healthy.

Linebacker Joey Porter, Miami's prized offseason acquisition, is sidelined for the preseason after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery last week. Dolphins offensive tackle Vernon Carey left the game with a right knee contusion.
