Barber, Jones propel Cowboys past Broncos
Aug 19, 2007 - 3:46 AM By Randy Krone PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterIRVING, Texas (Ticker) - The Dallas Cowboys didn't turn out to be the most hospitable of hosts on Saturday.
Wrapping up a four-day practice visit by the Denver Broncos on Saturday night, the Cowboys defeated the Broncos, 31-20, led by two rushing touchdowns by Marion Barber III and one by Julius Jones.
The loss could be especially painful for the Broncos.
Starting running back Travis Henry had 10 carries for 25 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter with a left knee sprain.
"It's a first-degree MCL ... that's what we think. We'll do an MRI to make sure," Denver coach Mike Shanahan said. "If it is, he could be ready for next week's game. If it's something more serious, obviously we'd be talking longer."
Backup running back Mike Bell strained his left hip in the third quarter and did not return.
"The injury happened earlier in practice," Bell said. "Just playing on it made it feel worse but there was one specific play where it really tightened up on me."
The Broncos also lost defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban to a strained right achilles' tendon and backup safety Curome Cox to a strained right shoulder.
"It looks like it could be an achilles tear," Shanahan said. "If that's the case, it could keep out the entire season." The Broncos had been in Dallas most of the week working out with the Cowboys, but had very little to show for it when it counted Saturday night.
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo played the entire first half and completed 11-of-18 passing for 122 yards. Romo also had over 100 yards playing just one quarter last week against Indianapolis.
Romo led the Dallas offense down the field repeatedly with drives of 47, 60, 69 and 30 yards.
Barber, who had touchdowns runs of 1 and 5 yards, ended the night with 57 yards on 11 carries. Jones ended the night with 31 yards on nine carries and a 4-yard touchdown run. Third team tailback Tyson Thompson led all rushers with 16 yards on 75 carries.
Jay Cutler, the Broncos' second-year starting quarterback, was 7-of-13 for 58 yards playing most of the first half.
The Broncos were limited to two first-half Jason Elam field goals, both of which came off Dallas turnovers.
Dre Bly's second-quarter interception and Nick Ferguson's recovery of a Sam Hurd fumble set up both Denver first-half scores.
Both Broncos' touchdowns came in the second half behind backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey who had touchdowns passes of 90 yards to Brian Clark and 5 yards to Quincy Morgan. Ramsey ended his evening 10-of-17 for 169 yards.
