Rookie QB Edwards sparks Bills in preseason finale
Aug 31, 2007 - 2:38 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Rookie quarterback Trent Edwards guided the Buffalo Bills from a 13-point deficit to a 16-13 victory over Detroit Lions on Thursday night in the final NFL preseason game for each team.Rian Lindell kicked a 21-yard field goal, his third of the game, to break a 13-13 tie with 1:46 remaining and cap a 15-play, 90-yard drive.
Edwards, who was drafted out of Stanford, entered the game late in the first half and completed 18-of-24 passes for 182 yards, including a 24-yarder to Matt Murphy and a 23-yarder to Jonathan Smith in the final scoring drive.
Detroit sat out most of its key starters on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Jon Kitna, wide receivers Roy Williams and Mike Furrey, tight end Dan Campbell and running back Tatum Ball on offense and linebackers Ernie Sims and Paris Lenon, tackles Shaun Rogers and Cory Redding, cornerback Fernando Bryant and safety Kenoy Kennedy on defense.
Wide receiver Lee Evans didn't play for Buffalo and the rest of the Bills' starters played only the first quarter.
With Kitna out and Dan Orlovsky unable to play because of a toe injury, J.T. O'Sullivan played the entire game at quarterback for Detroit, completing 15-of-24 passes for 164 yards.
It was the second straight game that O'Sullivan has gone the distance for the Lions, who open the regular season at Oakland on Septemer 9.
Bills starting quarterback J.P. Losman played two offensive series and completed 5-of-6 passes for 43 yards. Craig Nall also played two series and Edwards went the rest of the way.
Jason Hanson kicked field goals of 51 and 24 yards to give Detroit a 6-0 lead. The Lions scored their only touchdown of the first half on an 18-yard pass from O'Sullivan to tight end Sean McHugh to make it 13-0 with 1:52 left in the first half.
Buffalo, which opens the season at home against the Denver Broncos, got a 45-yard field goal from Lindell on the final play of the first half to cut Detroit's lead to 13-3.
The Bills took the second-half kickoff and marched 72 yards in 11 plays, with Fred Jackson scoring on a 5-yard run. Lindell's 40-yard field goal with 10:15 remaining tied the game at 13-all.
Each team finished the preseason with 2-2 records.
