Nugent's field goal lifts Jets over Eagles
Aug 31, 2007 - 3:30 AM By Vince DiGregorio PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Mike Nugent's second field goal of the game ensured that New York gained a split in the baseball/football doubleheader played here on Thursday.
Nugent's 35-yard field goal as time expired gave the New York Jets a 13-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the preseason finale for both teams at Lincoln Financial Field.
The ending was similar to the baseball game across the street at Citizens Bank Park, where the Philadelphia Phillies rallied for an 11-10 victory over the New York Mets earlier in the afternoon.
Th Jets (3-1) were trailing, 11-10, when backup quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo engineered a 16-play, 65-yard scoring drive in the final 2 minutes, 50 seconds that culminated in Nugent's game-winning kick.
On the previous drive, Eagles rookie QB Kevin Kolb capped a 13-play, 90-yard drive with a 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Zac Collie with 2:50 left, then passed to RB Nate Ilaoa for the two-point conversion that gave Philadelphia (1-3) an 11-10 lead.
Tuiasosopo scored on an 11-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter to give New York a 10-3 lead.
Tuiasosopo played the second half and completed 9-of-16 passes for 78 yards. Second-year quarterback Kellen Clemens played just one series and was 2-for-2 for 12 yards, while Brad Smith finished the first half and went 2-for-8 for 29 yards.
A.J. Feeley started for the Eagles at quarterback and played the first quarter, passing for 79 yards on 6-of-9 attempts. Kolb played the rest of the way, completing 22-of-33 passes for 220 yards and one TD.
Both teams rested their front-line players and the first three quarters reflected the lack of offensive chances.
The only highlight of a scoreless first quarter was the play of Jets' nose tackle C.J. Mosley, who sacked Feeley three times for losses totaling 30 yards. Mosley also had two forced fumbles.
The teams traded field goals in the second quarter. Nugent gave the Jets a 3-0 lead on a 48-yarder with 5:40 remaining and David Akers answered for the Eagles with a 43-yard field goal with 1:49 left.
Rookie Tony Hunt led Philadelphia in rushing with 12 carries for 49 yards, while Stacy Tutt led New York with 12 attempts for 48 yards.
The teams will also face each other during the regular season on October 14 at Giants Stadium.
Both squads open the regular season on September 9 with the Jets hosting New England and the Eagles visiting Green Bay.
