Eagles look to continue success against Redskins
Sep 17, 2007 - 10:34 AM Washington (1-0) at Philadelphia (0-1) Monday 8:30 pm EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Eagles swept the Washington Redskins last season on their way to winning the NFC East title.
Looking to continue their success against the Redskins, the Eagles host their NFC East rival on Monday night.
Philadelphia has dominated the season series against Washington in recent seasons, winning eight of the last 10 meetings.
In the meeting between the teams here last season, the Eagles coasted to a 27-3 win. Donovan McNabb threw an 84-yard touchdown pass to Donte Stallworth and cornerback Sheldon Brown returned an interception 70 yards for a score.
It also was an especially painful game for Redskins running back Clinton Portis, who suffered a broken right hand in the first quarter. The injury forced Portis to miss the final seven games of the season.
The Eagles nearly squandered an 18-point lead in the second meeting last season before holding on for a 21-19 victory.
Philadelphia's win in December came without McNabb, who missed the final six games with a torn ACL in his right knee.
Making his return, McNabb struggled with his accuracy in last Sunday's 16-13 season-opening loss at Green Bay. The five-time Pro Bowler completed just 15-of-33 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown with an interception.
The Eagles came up short against the Packers despite not allowing an offensive touchdown.
Philadelphia was done in by its special teams as Greg Lewis muffed a punt that was recovered for a touchdown. Lewis was replaced by J.R. Reed, who also muffed a punt with under a minute remaining, setting up rookie Mason Crosby's 43-yard field goal with two seconds remaining.
Washington also was involved in a low-scoring game in its opener but emerged with a 16-13 overtime triumph over Miami.
Portis made a successful return to the lineup, rushing for 98 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. He split time in the backfield with Ladell Betts, who gained 59 yards on 17 attempts.
Betts gashed the Eagles in the second meeting between the teams last season, rushing for a career-high 171 yards on 33 carries.
The Redskins will be looking for more in the passing game from Jason Campbell, who went 12-of-21 for 222 yards and two interceptions in the opener. His favorite target was Antwaan Randle El, who had five catches for 162 yards.
Campbell and Randle El will not have to deal with Eagles Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard, who is sidelined indefinitely after suffering a sprained MCL in his knee last week.
